Treo 270 & 300 Officially Discontinued

Palm and Treo sites/blogs have recently seen a lot of discourse on the Treo 600, and whether or not its progeny will ultimately supplant the stand-alone PDA.  I rather doubt it, as the Treonauts tend to be different animals than the PDAces out there.  Exactly how we are different came into focus when I was reading TreoCentral last evening.  Their lead article is about the 'official' discontinuation of the Treo 270 and Treo 300 models.  I say 'official', because manufacture stopped quite a while ago, and PalmOne was just selling out the inventory.

I owned a Treo 300, and liked it...a lot.  My son uses it now, sans wireless or telephone service (no, I'm not cheap...he's only eight years old!).  The reason I bought it, was because as much as I loved my Palm Pilot, IIIx and Vx, I always wanted more then just a dynamic storage/retrieval unit.  I wanted ACCESS.  I got a taste of it with OmniSky, and a much bigger bite with the Treo 300.  The Treonauts need to be connected...now, and to manage their worlds from the palms of their hands.  They are willing to sacrifice development of base functionality for the cutting edge and innovation.  Obviously, we are an egocentric lot; and, just as obviously, growing by leaps & bounds.  The PDAces are more focused on full-bore computing and the fewest possible compromises, with WiFi and Bluetooth as their connectivity paradigm of choice.  Which one is better? Both.  They each play to a disctinctly different audience; and, I believe that the future for both is robust, and full of things that the most clever of us hasn't even dreamed of.

So, I tip my hat, and wipe a nostalgic tear to the memory of the Treo 300. It was a true original and trailblazer in the Palm family.

I too was an Omnisky user - one of the original beta group - and it was my first entree into the world of online, continual handheld internet access. It was great to get in early, and it's too bad they couldn't come up with some sort of sustainable business model.
