Lightning Fast Future Mobiles
While I hope that this does not end up as yet another big failed attempt on the part of the mobile industry to hype up what promises to be a very cool future technology, the Associated Press reports of a new plan where we may see our future Treo accessing the web at speeds up to 100 megabits per second (that's 2,000 times faster than dial-up modems) within five years.
A group of about 26 wireless carriers and telecom equipment makers including Cingular, Vodafone, China Mobile, NEC and NTT DoCoMo are working together to come up with a common standard by 2007 for a beefed-up standard for a 3G mobile phone system called W-CDMA that will try to raise 3G communication speeds to those obtained by optical fiber. They hope to offer the new 3G system dubbed 'Super 3G' by around 2009.
However, FierceWireless reports that "South Korean wireless vendors Samsung and LG are not excited by the proposed wireless standard Super 3G. Both companies suggest that Super 3G is nothing more than an attempt by NTT DoCoMo and its ecosystem of partners to sidestep or take over the process of creating 4G, the next stage in wireless network evolution. Samsung is already in the process of creating its own 4G technology. Analysts and insiders suggest the wireless industry could be bracing for another standards fight."
There is no doubt that a global standard would be best and that wireless carriers need to bring their network bandwidth up to a level where they are no longer scared senseless that they might be overwhelmed by 'inconsiderate' users who are connecting 24/7 to the web via their unlimited data plans. Surely a 200,000% jump in their future bandwidth capabilities will once and for all put this issue to rest and allow us to freely connect as often as we like, wherever we like and at a price that we like... In the meantime many will undoubtedly opt for the latest Treo 650 WiFi hack to get their fix.
Treonauts crave bandwidth...
