Treo 650 GSM

Well, it didn't take long into the new year for the first buzz to build up for our much anticipated Treo 650 GSM.

Cingular (now also merged with AT&T Wireless) is showing off its model (picture below via Ubergizmo) at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) held in Las Vegas and will (hopefully) also use the venue to announce a specific date for its release...

Although I can't tell too much from the picture the Cingular model looks identical to the AT&T one that I had the opportunity to demo at CTIA in San Francisco last year which sports a gunmetal blue frame around the screen.  It would have been fun for Cingular to use its orange corporate colors but who knows perhaps this will be something that Orange in Europe will do instead.  At any rate it looks like there won't be a charcoal colored Treo 650.

[Update] Here's an additional tidbit of information...  There are specific rumors that Cingular/AT&T plans to begin shipments of their Treo 650 this January after the company had found problems with it and asked palmOne to fix them before they would release it.  Apparently the now widely known memory and call quality issues were some of the things that needed fixing and while there's still nothing on the memory front it would appear that the "tin can call quality" has been rectified with a ROM/firmware update.  Interestingly, tests purportedly showed that people most likely to have call quality issues were those with facial hair that rubs the phone - go figure.  So, it looks like we might get a 'perfect' Treo 650 after all...

Treonauts can't wait to have a Treo 650 GSM in their hand...

Can anyone tell me if I puchase a Treo650 in the US, will it work seamlessly when I return to Australia by simply changing to a local network providers SIM card? I assume that the quad band nature of the Treo650 means there will be no issues.

although i'm extremely happy that it migth be out soon, i'm sure its going to be hell to get one in your hands when the start to sell it.

I think i will wait a few weeks and watch what happens and if any bugs and stuff comes up, also the price plans i hope cingular does not change them.

MikeHS,

An *unlocked* GSM 650 will work anywhere. However, 1) if you buy one in the States right now, all that's available is the Sprint version (using CDMA instead of GSM, so that won't work for you) and 2) most GSM providers in the US lock their phones to only work on that carrier. If you can get an unlocked one in the States (i.e. direct from palmOne with no carrier specified), that's your best bet. It'll run the full retail price ($599, I think); on the upside, though, you can get it sooner.

I am close to purchasing a Treo 650 this weekend, but am hesitant because of the GSM model to be released soon as well as the 700 model. I've been using a Sony Clie NX60 with OS5 and accessing my email on my Sprint SPH-A620. Now I will be commuting a longer distance and my Sony isn't covered by a loss or damage plan, and my Sprint phone isn't available for a $150 upgrade discount until June, so I want to combine the 2 and the Treo seems to do that. I searched and only found one discount at Audible.com which has a deal for $100 off the Treo 650 if you sign up to become a member for 1 year.

My question is am I going to be wasting money. Is the Treo upgrade to GSM or the 700 model going to be just around the corner?

Plus is it better to get a travel charger to plug it in and charge at work or pay more for an additional battery. And which memory card with the most memory is the best deal. And what adaptor is needed for Audible.com and what are the best headphones should I get for that. And will I be able to listen to music on my Treo; if so music from Rhapsody, and Audible? Thanks!

Should I wait or should I buy??

Please help me quick before I foolishly place an order. My pocketbook and I thank you. Signed, A New Year's Baby Treonaut Tad
