palmOne Raises Unlocked GSM Treo 650 Price!?!?!

Judging by the number of emails flowing into my inbox many Treonauts are (to put it mildly) extremely upset by the latest turn of events relating to the unlocked version of the Treo 650 GSM - quite rightly so.

Out of the blue, last night palmOne increased the price of the unlocked GSM by $100 (some 15%) to $699 from the previously advertised $599.  There has been no press release about this nor some sort of apology of any kind so it is still my hope that this is but one of the latest in a string of 'errors' on the part of palmOne and that the price will soon revert back to its original advertised price.

However, this appears to be complete wishful thinking on my part as a palmOne sales representative confirmed the price increase to $699 and attributed the previous advertised price of $599 as an 'error'.  This representative was unable to inform me as to whether sales placed at $599 would be honored by the company but I reckon that this is the very least that they could do.

I am at a total loss trying to understand what happened here but I just can't buy the party line that this price increase could be simply attributed to an 'error'.  An educated guess is that Cingular and/or other carriers applied pressure to avoid having the unlocked Treo 650 GSM compete directly with their own offerings.  Another possibility is that the price discrepancy between the unlocked Treo 650 in the US and the rest of the world was too high and palmOne may have felt that it was necessary to reduce this gap.  Yet another scenario, is that sales rates of the unlocked version have been so high in the past couple of days that palmOne may have felt that it had room to increase its price without reducing demand.

Either way, even though I believe that there will be significant pressure on palmOne to explain this 'sudden' price increase I don't think that we'll find out for sure what happened.  At present it looks like US Treonauts will have to live with the new official price of $699 for the unlocked version thus conveniently making Cingular's 'subsidised' version that much more appealing...

UPDATE: It appears that palmOne will do the right thing and at least honor purchases of the unlocked Treo 650 GSM made at the previous 'erroneous' price of $599.  However, this will be little consolation for all but the lucky Treonauts who were first in the queue...

I purchased and tested one of the early Sprint phones and sent it back I think in 3 days. Two MAJOR shortcomings have not heard if they will address. I'm aware of the Memory "Problem" per se but have not see the "lack of memory" issue addressed specifically. If you take a Treo600 and a Treo650 and just load them both up with the out of the box software...you are left with LESS memory in the newer more expensive more capable product. 23 MB of Base Ram is all it ships with and that just does not cut it. With everything I Normally load on my 600 I was left with 3MB on the 650 and I had 7MB on the 600? Anyway with memory as cheap as it is why doesn't this thing ship with 256MB or 512MB of base memory. I had one tech support person tell me to move my "PROGRAMS" or other data to the SD Card. Yeah....how many programs tell you that they love to run on the SD card much less can run at all?

2nd issue. You can not voicedial from the Bluetooth headset OOOPPSSS! forgot to test that one didn't you!

So, we are recommending Stay away till mid year to see if Palm addresses these issues or don't waste your money.

PS. Our main products don't run on the new operating system either...another plus? Don't you think they would have made sure the PalmOS platform was at least backward compatibile with a high majority of applications and not change it so drastically that product don't run on them anymore. So double check your software to see if it will run on the new Palm OS that ships with this phone.

I have bean looking at gsm smartphones now for over a year Trying to decide what would be the best for me; Ipaq from T-Mobil too many problems & no support, BenQ P50 Q3 & $800 I don’t think so & the list goes on. Every major Manufacturer & carrier has some kind of BS going on & then I found the Treo 650; I don’t mind the paltry memory, WiFi Not a problem this is a easy work around, software not a Problem, tons of it out there to do anything you want; but At $699 or $599 sorry folks I’m not impressed.
Is it just me or is there something I’m not understanding: How many more MILLIONS of people would have jumped? At getting this phone if it had bean introduced at $399 with $100 rebate with a service contract.
At my detail shop I charged $150 for a full detail while every One else was charging $250 or more, I made more money in Volume than the rest & put 2 other detailers out of business.
I just don’t get it.

Avoid Cingular like the plague - they simply dont care if you remain their customer or not. Just wait until the T-mobile Treo is out or use an unlocked one with T-mobile.
Cingular - with their non-standard (850) frequencies, and their attitude is a company headed down the tube.
I had Cingular (coming from ATT) for 2 weeks and it was ENOUGH!

My Cingular Treo 650 works fine. Took it to So. America day after I received it. Connected in 5 So American Countries and 2 Carribean islands few if any serious problems. Surfed the web while crossing the Panama Canal in the dinning room of the cruise ship Crystal Symphony. Sent text messages from eveywhere!! BUT...would certainly like to unlock it ASAP before I head to Europe. Enfora makes a wi-fi "cradle" for the 600 ( don't know if they support the 650 yet ??) but not sure WI-FI SD cards will work!! Can anyone confirm that ??

there are only 2 ways of unlocking the TREO 650, 1 is by asking your service provider for the unlock code and 2nd is by flashing ur ROM and replacing it w/ the unlocked version.

I just try the unlock code *#*#89155271# and guess what.... It didn't work. I entered the code and used my co-workers t-mobie sim card and couldn't make a call. Does somebody out there has a solid code that has already been tested and worked? Thanks

Had the treo 650 for 1 month, and haven't found a way or code to unlock it yet!!! If anyone knows a way, I will try it. But, I don't want to pay another 100.00. I already have 500 in the phone.

Like others I bought a Treo 650 and can´t used it since I live in Chile. I tried several times calling the customer service of Cingular and its impossible to contact them.

Any body have any solid information of how to unblock this thing? I´d really appreciate it.
