palmOne Raises Unlocked GSM Treo 650 Price!?!?!

Judging by the number of emails flowing into my inbox many Treonauts are (to put it mildly) extremely upset by the latest turn of events relating to the unlocked version of the Treo 650 GSM - quite rightly so.

Out of the blue, last night palmOne increased the price of the unlocked GSM by $100 (some 15%) to $699 from the previously advertised $599.  There has been no press release about this nor some sort of apology of any kind so it is still my hope that this is but one of the latest in a string of 'errors' on the part of palmOne and that the price will soon revert back to its original advertised price.

However, this appears to be complete wishful thinking on my part as a palmOne sales representative confirmed the price increase to $699 and attributed the previous advertised price of $599 as an 'error'.  This representative was unable to inform me as to whether sales placed at $599 would be honored by the company but I reckon that this is the very least that they could do.

I am at a total loss trying to understand what happened here but I just can't buy the party line that this price increase could be simply attributed to an 'error'.  An educated guess is that Cingular and/or other carriers applied pressure to avoid having the unlocked Treo 650 GSM compete directly with their own offerings.  Another possibility is that the price discrepancy between the unlocked Treo 650 in the US and the rest of the world was too high and palmOne may have felt that it was necessary to reduce this gap.  Yet another scenario, is that sales rates of the unlocked version have been so high in the past couple of days that palmOne may have felt that it had room to increase its price without reducing demand.

Either way, even though I believe that there will be significant pressure on palmOne to explain this 'sudden' price increase I don't think that we'll find out for sure what happened.  At present it looks like US Treonauts will have to live with the new official price of $699 for the unlocked version thus conveniently making Cingular's 'subsidised' version that much more appealing...

UPDATE: It appears that palmOne will do the right thing and at least honor purchases of the unlocked Treo 650 GSM made at the previous 'erroneous' price of $599.  However, this will be little consolation for all but the lucky Treonauts who were first in the queue...

Guys, here is what I have experienced. You need to contact Cingular to get a unique unlocking code that is based on your phone's IMEI number. It is a 8-digit number and you can TRULY unlock it by *#*#8digits# then dial. I just got my code and unlocked my Treo 650. Tried a T-mobile card and worked!!!

When I called Cingular, I told them I need to travel to south asia and need to use a local SIM card.

AT&T customers: You need to be persistent. AT&T custemer serve say NO to your request and tell you that the phone can not be unlocked. When you call Cingular, they will also initially tell you that they do not have the code to unlock ATT phones. However, you need to ask them to check their computer to see whether your IHME# is in there...

Opposite question, and forgive me if it is a stupid one: If I buy an unlocked phone, will Cingular sell me a SIM card to use with its network?

few answers,
yes, you can get an unlocked 650 and use it on t mobile or any oher gsm network. if you bought sprint it will only work on sprint. it can't be unlocked, there is nothing to unlock. they have a totally unique network.
i have an unlocked cingular treo 650 and use it with t mobile. my german sim works great in it as well.
my advice would be buy a cheaper unlocked treo 650 on ebay or something. can be found for way under $699.

Hi Folks,

This is my first post here and I am very eagerly waiting to order a 650 like right now, "but" am holding back and trying to make a decision regading which carrier to get it with in the U.S.. (I currently have AT&T --forced to Cingular in a few more months.) Would love to have it unlocked for Asia and Europe travel as well!

Please advise if it makes sense to switch (implcitly) to Cingular and just stay with them or to switch to another one like Verizn, T-Mobile, Sprint,... and the best place to get it as well. I would greatly appreciate all feedback, sugestions.

Thanks a ton!
Vivek

you can unlock your treo 600 and treo 650 through a group of devry stundents majoring in computer programming, they are located in calgary, canada. they can unlock any treo . visit there website www.unlocktreo.com
you have to mail in the phone, but they unlock it and mail out with a tracking number the following day

I just bought an unlocked Treo 600 thru BuyDig.com. The price was right at $275. But do I really "need" to buy an SD memory card? Or is that just a gimmick that all the retailers try to sell you?

AAAaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggg! I'm an American living in Britain right now, working with the DOD. Came here from Germany. My current phone is 'un'smart, an old Nokia that was originally a Vodaphone branded & locked 6110 model. I can now use it with O2, Vodaphone, T-Mobile, Orange and Virgin. I was told it was impossible, but I can. Had my eye on the Treo 650 because of it's quad band set up (and it's 'smart'), figuring I could use it with any SIM, anyplace in the world. IF those bands are indeed available, 850,900,1800 & 1900, WHY can't we just buy any available SIM and get to phoning? The idea of being forced to use one or the other 'service' and that one only sux big time. Low memory is another problem with the 650. What options do we have?? What use is having a quad band phone if you can only use it with a particular service and that service may not exist where ever you are??

Answers?? Oh yeah, sorry for the rant.

Is there anybody who is truly happy with the Treo 650/600 family of smart phones? If you had it to do all over again, what would you do?

Hi, I have an unlocked Cingular treo 650, they have disabled the Blue Tooth dial up networking on this phone. What happens if I down load the unlocked GSM 1.13 updater? The Palm site tells you NOT to download this version of the software if you didn't "purchase" your phone as an unlocked GSM. I am afraid that my Cingular settings will be changed and not connect at all. Please let me know if you know. Thanks

There is no "fix" for the Treo 650 lack of memory, 32 MB. This was Palm's way of telling us that they want us to buy the same phone several times. The latest PocketPC phones may be closing in on the Treo but I've used it because of my palm software. Personally I've had it with Palm's arrogance, lack of responsiveness regarding the bugs and will jump ship to PPC in the future when they equal or surpass the next Treos.

Unlocking my Treo 650 was easy when I purchased a key from Dave at www.unlockmyphonenow.com and did it online without having to send the phone to anyone. When I did have a question I got hold of the guys at treo650@4321media.com who were very helpful.

Love the phone - love the process!
