Treo 680: Woohoo!!! Cingular & Unlocked GSM From $199

The wait is finally over… After some agonizing weeks for all existing and will-be Treonauts the Treo 680 from Palm and Cingular is now finally available to buy just in time for the Thanksgiving holidays and I have been particularly lucky to already get one in my hands…
Palm’s Unlocked GSM Treo 680 – priced at $399 – is now available to preorder exclusively via the Palm online store and Palm US retail stores. As previously posted, Palm’s unlocked version is offered in four new colors - Crimson (red), Copper (orange), Arctic (white) and graphite (grey) pictured here on the right.
The Palm OS based Treo 680 smartphone has an internal antenna and slim form factor, making the device smaller and sleeker than its Treo predecessors in the US. It's also the first Treo smartphone to come in unique colors. But beyond the Treo 680's new design, customers will find the Treo 680 smartphone easy to use and packed full of features beyond its stellar phone capability, such as email, web browsing, messaging, multimedia, calendar, contacts and more.
The Treo 680 and the Treo 700p smartphones are among the first mobile phones to support streaming Flash-based movies, including those found on YouTube, with the release of the new Kinoma Media Player 4EX.
For a limited time, the Treo 680 will come with a music bundle from Yahoo!, which includes a 30-day free trial to its Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go service and Yahoo! Music For Mobile. Users have the ability to access the Yahoo! Music Unlimited music library from the phone and to send tracks remotely to a PC.
Cingular’s Treo 680 – from $199 with a two year contract and unlimited data plan – is available to order immediately online and it will be available across Cingular stores and select retailers beginning this Friday Nov. 24.
Among others, the Treo 680 now offers:
- A new internal antenna enables a sleeker design;
- An improved phone application on the Treo 680 smart device allows users to dial faster;
- The ability to ignore calls with a quick text message lets users tell a caller "I'm in a meeting" or "Can't talk now";
- The large, bright color screen is perfect for viewing email, documents or spreadsheets via DataViz Documents To Go(R), and even photos and movies;
- The highly regarded built-in QWERTY keyboard has improved buttons, making it even easier to type emails or SMS messages;
- The messaging application displays text-messaging conversations as "threaded chats," similar to IM, so users can see their entire conversation with a particular person; and
- The Treo 680 smart device also can be used as an MP3 player and has an integrated digital camera, camcorder and video player, with simpler organization for photos and photo slideshows.
Treonauts are always celebrating…

Is everyones wait time 1-2 weeks? So technically it didn't get released. We just got a release date for perorders. Either way I ordered artic. But I'm starting to think if I should just keep my pearl since I've been waiting for palm for so long I got used to and somewhat started liking the pearls? Suggestions?
i called in cingular and they took my order. they are overnighting it...it will be here friday.
My order (Copper) had the following link in the confirmation email. It is supposed to be updated early and often.

Any indication whether the 680 is upgradable to HSDPA when it becomes available?
News from Italy.
I just got an email from palm offering Treo 680 at € 680,- (around US$ 870.-) vat included.. crazy price!
Troop - yes, both the TomTom GPS Bundle http://shop.treonauts.com/content/accessories/10-41--379.htm and Palm GPS Navigator http://shop.treonauts.com/content/accessories/10-41--1119.htm will work with the Treo 680.
Cheers, A.

Question, what number did you dial to place your order for the 680?
Please advise, because I just called and they said it's not available yet, and wont be until Friday.
Thanks.

I don't know if this changes anything, and if it does. SORRY!! but, on monday i had called in ordering the BlackJack (because i got impatient for waiting for the 680) and then tuesday i called back and canceled the order for the blackjack. then out of the blue i told them about the 680, and they said, "we can take your order for the 680, but we dont know the shipping date."
to make a long story short...i called in today and they said they still had my order and they are overnighting it.
maybe the guy i got was nice? dont know...
Whoowhooooo!
I picked up my new Treo 680 from a Cingular store in St. Charles, MO, a suburb of St. Louis. They are not officially for sale until Friday, but this store will sell this now.
QUESTIONS:
1) Will I have to buy all new cradles, spare battery (regular) and car charger with the 680 from a 650. I have cradles at home and work and I would love to not have to buy new ones.
Bill - if you already own accessories for a Treo 650 or Treo 700 'most' of them will work just fine with the Treo 680. We're still updating all the products in the Treonauts Accessories Shop http://shop.treonauts.com to show compatibility (use the 'Select Your Treo' pull-down menu at the top left).
I can tell you that all existing cradles will work (Palm's original cradle will also charge the Treo 680 battery), that your regular or extended spare battery will not work (new spare Treo 680 batteries should be in stock next week + a new Treo 680 extended battery is also expected within a month or two at the most) and your existing car charger will also work.
I will write a full review of compatible accessories within the next week.
Cheers, A.
I forgot a couple of details. The model cingular is selling is the silver, and initial stock is apparently limited. It costs $299, plus an $18 activation fee. There is a $100 mail in rebate back to Cingular. And the treo is as beautiful as it appears in pics. I will say, though, that my 2400 extended battery does not fit, nor apparently the 1600 battery from the treo 650.
I was just at my local Cingular store in Los Angeles and they confirmed with me that they have not received their stock of the 680. They stated that they were made aware that the product release is this Friday, but they will have no stock. They also don't have the new 8525 or the Blackjack in stock either so it looks like at least around here all the shipments are lagging behind.
Question #31
I have a friend who works for Cingular and I asked him the MediaNet question. He stated that although you could possibly use the Media Net funtion, it's not recommended for two reason. The first one being is that Cingular blocks a large number of internet sites if you use MediaNet so in a sense they have created a firewall so you won't be able to access all the sites. Secondly, I was told that they also monitor your data download on Media Net and although it's unlimited, they can detect if you are downloading more data than a normal media net phone would be capable of doing. He stated that they are monitoring this more and more now that people are trying to find ways around the more expensive data plans. I certainly don't know if either of these things are true since I haven't ever had Media Net, but he's usually pretty helpful with me in finding ways to skirt the system and he said this one will only work if you use internet/data very little and depending on the sites you want to visit.
@Robogeek (46) - I had also ordered at $349 on the hidden page (which was canceled), and then I re-ordered a copper model today at $399. I received a call from Palm this afternoon about the first order, saying they would honor the price if I wanted to order a new one now that they were available. When I told him that I already placed an order, he took the order number and said he'd give me a $50 credit.
I visited a local Corporate Cingular store and they already have the 680 and are selling them. Physically seeing one might get me to upgrade from the 650....
This certainly won't make the Europeans any happier, but the US doesn't have a VAT tax. The US$399 price is the actual price you'll pay unless you live in California where Palm is located -- you'll have to pay sales tax then.
Will it become available here for sales to us European customers not willing to pay double price because we live the wrong place?! Or are there any restrictions that might prevent this?
Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The 680 is now on the Cingular site to buy now at a price of $199.99 (upgrade). The wait is finally over. The only thing is that Cingular only have the graphite color, but the main thing is it's available on Cingular.com now. I already ordered mine. Had to pay $299.99 and get a $100 rebate!!!!!
As usual Palm Canada SUCKS. Yes - it looks as if you can purchase it online, you can get all the way through filling the order phone. But no cigar. And they don't know when they'll get it. But they will sell you a 650 for $549 Whoo hoo!!
The treo 680 is already in cingular stores. I got mine on tuesday night. I was there to look at the 8525 and the salemen told me the 680 had just come in. I was the first to get it. I like it much better than my girlfriends 650. However, I am not sure if I like it better than my moto q. Anyway, if you want the 680 now, go to Cingular wireless store at East Gate Shopping Center in Moorestown NJ.
The European price reflects the current weakness of the dollar versus the euro and pound sterling. They are simply exploiting the fact that one euro really does not buy $1.30 worth of goods. In much of western Europe, certainly in the big cities, a euro has the purchasing power of about a dollar. Paris and Brussels and Amsterdam, and especially London, feel expensive to an American, and Boston and San Francisco and even New York feel cheap to European tourists. This is magnified, as other posters have noted, Europeans have traditionally paid more for electonic goods and suffer from the punishing 17.5 percent Value Added Tax. All in all, good for Palm and its shareholders, bad for European treonauts.
So, for a current Cingular subscriber what's the bottom line with getting the best unlimited data plan pricing? I'm planning on getting an unlocked model directly from Palm. Can someone give a definitive breakdown, please? Thanks.
Can anyone confirm that treo 680s from Cingular stores can be unlocked to any GSM carriers, just like the old treo 650 days? Thanks.
#44 David,
I was told that I was in the first batch as well. Has your order status updated any? Mine still says "Order Received"
When I ordered it, they told me it would have shipped by now.
ancker- I was told ABOUT the first shipment and that I would PROBABLY be on it, but nothing definate. With my sorry luck and the incident with their call center, I'm sure I'll wind up receiving my 2 680s in 2 weeks :( And yes, my order still says only "Order Received"
