Last year I wrote a long post explaining how to “Make Your Own Free Treo Ringtones” in either WAV, MIDI or MP3 formats and how to change, add and manage these on your Treo [update] AND Centro smartphone.

At the time the best solution that I had found was using an application called WavePad on my PC to edit the MP3 music files and convert them to a Treo/Centro-friendly WAV ringtone.

I have however now found an even better, faster and much simpler solution to add MP3 ringtones directly to my Treo thanks to a freeware application called MiniTones.

MiniTones is a small (only 55K) application that enables you to select any MP3 file from your SD card [see Treo accessories or Centro accessories] and quickly add it to your “Ring Tones” list in your “Sounds & Alerts” Preferences (without MiniTones you can natively only add WAV or MIDI files to your Treo).  When you launch MiniTones the application quickly scans your SD card for compatible MP3 files and then lists all of these (below left).  You can play the file here and once you have selected the one that you want press the “Add Selected” button that will open an “Add Tone” window (below right).

However, you will typically not want to immediately add the entire MP3 file because 1) your ringtone only needs to be 20 to 30 seconds long instead of 4 minutes+ and 2) because you don’t want to add a 5MB+ file to your main memory.

Conveniently, MiniTones incorporates an extremely useful and powerful “Trim” tool (below left) that allows you to quickly select only the portion of a song that you wish to use as your ringtone.  You simply select the Start and End of the trim by either sliding the timer bars on the screen or by pressing the “+ or -“ buttons and you can also easily see the trimmed file size on the left and duration on the right.

In this case I selected a 32sec segment (reducing the original file from 5.9MB/4mins 16s to only 764.7KB/32s).  After pressing OK and then Add my newly created MP3 ringtone was almost instantly added to my Ring Tones list (below left) and ready to be used for any profile that I want.

Overall, MiniTones is an extraordinarily quick, simple and extremely convenient way to add MP3 ringtone capabilities to your PalmOS Treo smartphone and is an ideal solution for any Treonaut with basic ringtone needs.  More demanding or advanced users will continue to be best served by the more extensive features of Ringo Pro or the latest version of mRing which has become increasingly more popular.

Treonauts always have the best tones ringing

Sorry for keep on posting here, I've finally found out that for some reason may be because of another application, all the contacts got a ringtone, that is why when i set a ring tone in the phone it wont work. now I've removed them all and set them to default, and then the Minitone works like charm impressive I would have bought it for 20$ if it was not for free.
thanks to all.

Apparently I am extremely nontechnical! I downloaded minitones onto my computer. I do not know how to open it. Do I have to have internet on my Treo to download/use minitones?? Sorry it is such a novice question...Thanks-Kelli

so, kelli did you get your question answered? I would like to download the minitones to my computer, but I don't really want to download it to my treo via the internet.

FINALLY!!!! I have been looking EVERYWHERE for a way to get ringtones on my 755p. Even the people at Verizon had no idea (they suggested Ringo....which should be called "Sucko" instead bc it is crap). This little program works FABULOUSLY. I'm sooooo happy and thankful to the genius who developed it :) Minitones lets me use my own cd's and music as ringtones, which is freaking awesome bc that means I don't have to pay $$$ for ringtones ever again. I'm no computer whiz, so thankfully as soon as I clicked on the download button it immediately placed itself in my palmone quick install menu. I synced my treo and then it scanned my card for music and VIOLA! Now I finally have cool ringtones!!!! Yayyyyyy! Thank you Minitones! :)

I can't get the miniTones to work on my Treo 750. I'm completely bummed. When I trim the song and 'add' it to my sounds, my phone powers off and comes back on but with no additional sounds. Does anyone know if there is any software that will work with the 750?

Mario - check to make sure your songs are 128 bits or less.

by sninelives | Aug 5, 2008 7:33:03 AM

Please, somebody help all of us who have downloaded Minitones successfully, trimmed songs and hear them when we play them in settings, and then get the default ringer (which might be no sound) when someone calls us?

75
by hulahoops | Aug 7, 2008 11:13:06 PM

Having the exact same problem as sninelives.
I downloaded minitones, added already trimmed mp3's to my sd card and minitones saw all the songs and when I clicked add it correctly added them to my ringtones.
OK - So far only one designated contact with a selected mp3 works. For all the others it shows the selected ringtone in my contacts and in sound preferences YET when the phone rings it rings with DEFAULT ringtone.
I have tried deleting contacts and readding them as well as deleting MP3's and then putting them back on the sd card to minitunes and still no luck.
Is this possibly a defect in the chip with the Palm Centro (I am on a Verizon Centro)?
This would be a fabulous program if someone knows why this is happening and a work around for all of us having problems with it.
I am only sort of glad that other people are having a similar problem as now I know its nothing I've done wrong.
ANYONE WITH A SOLUTION PLEASE POST Thank you!!
