Treo A2DP Stereo Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones Review

Best Bluetooth Stereo HeadphonesThere is no doubt that Bluetooth Stereo Headphones for your Treo are becoming increasingly popular even though for now only the Windows Mobile Treo 750 fully supports the A2DP and AVRCP profiles required for use with these headsets.  Having said this, many Treo 680, 700p and 650 owners have recently also been able to enjoy the freedom of wireless audio thanks to an application called Softick Audio Gateway – the first Bluetooth audio streaming solution for PalmOS devices.

Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones

The latest set of stereo Bluetooth headphones that I’ve had the opportunity to test are the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones pictured here and I have to admit that in a very short period I’ve come to like them at lot.  So much so in fact that they have now become my preferred headsets (combined with the ActiveLife WorkoutCase) for running in the morning because the lack of cables makes it that much easier to move freely.

Clearly the Motorola S9 headphones have been designed with this “active” lifestyle in mind as there are no cables of any kind to fumble with, there are no small pieces that could go missing, the entire headset is extremely light and solid, the combination of hard plastic, rubber and black/red color further enhances the “sport” look while still being discreet enough to use in any situation.

The back of the headset (above) features a simple and large On/Off button, indicator light and also the charging connector – all of which are covered in red rubber.

The left ear loop provides touch sensitive volume controls and also the Call Answer/End button while the left side offers track Forward/Back controls as well as the Play/Pause button.  The speakers are large, loud and comfortable and three sets of different shaped and sized ear cups make it easy to find your perfect fit.

Aside from the three sets of ear cups, the Motorola S9 kit is pretty basic and includes a wall charger but suprisingly and annoyingly for a headset priced above $100 no USB charging cable is included (my only complaint really).

Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones

As I mentioned earlier, I found the S9 headphones to be extremely comfortable to wear for long periods of time – at only 36 grams the weight is easily balanced between your right and left ears – barely noticing that you’re wearing them.  The cantilevered design also ensures that the back of the unit normally “floats” over your neck without actually touching it.

Separately, I found Bluetooth audio quality and volume to be extremely good and I was also particularly impressed by the range which allowed to easily move over 5 meters away from my Treo without any sound distortion.  Inbound and outbound call quality is also good (a rated 6 hours of talk time) but for extended calls I feel that dedicated Bluetooth Wireless Headsets are still a better choice.

Overall what I like the most about these new S9 headphones is how simple to use, comfortable to wear and extremely solid they are – a combination that makes them ideal for sports but equally great if you just want to listen to music or watch movies while on the go.  Although I won’t be replacing any of my favourite Bluetooth headsets to make calls I am nonetheless now happily keeping the Motorola S9 for my morning runs.  My rating: Very Highly Recommended.

Treonauts always enjoy something new

Can girls with long hair wear this without having to put their hair up?

On my second pair due to sweat issue. I just received my replacements and I am going to seal the control buttons on both sides with.... something... not sure yet. I was toying with liquid nails using a toothpick or silicone. If they fry when I do it I will just replace them again.... This is a poorly designed product.

The second issue I have with my 700p is that when running outside I have the phone in my pocket and since the antenna on the S9 is in the back of my head, I lose signal on almost every stride!! that sucks. I have to buy a fanny pack to put my phone in close proximity to the antenna.

When I am in a health spa it is fine since there are many windows to bounce the bluetooth signal off of.

After further thought I think wrapping the controls in black electrical tape should do the trick.

Same problem with the volume after working out using the S9....I deliberately went to this product after sweat problems with other types I have tried.

Wish I would have found this site before I decided to purchase them.

I guess I will just continue to replace them until they won't replace them. At that point I agree with the idea of Class action lawsuit. Definitely a case of false advertising.

Hi Guys,

Mine packed up for a while but I got them working except for the mosic track back botton by leaving then overnight on a radiator.

I as reading this forum this morning and decided to take a closer look at my S9.

It turns out that the rubber over the controls are just stuck on with glue/double sided tape or whatever.

Gently easing the rubber back starting at the "M" Moto symbol so as not to damage the contacts, allowed me to peal the rubber and dry out the offending area, and the S9 is now fully functioning.

Just need to work out how to mahe them seal better.

I bought mine on Ebay second hand, and therefore have no warrenty, so did not mind taking them appart.

If yours are under waranty, send them back cos it's not your problem.

Hope this helps.

I received the Motorola S9 for Xmas. I have a Treo 700w. After downloading and installed the Treo 1.22 Firmware and Audio Patch from Palm website the S9 works perfectly. Before the patches the S9 only worked at talking on the phone after the patch I can now listen to music and talk on the phone. Only complaint is my Mom was given the floor model so no extra ear buds were in the package. But that is the Radio Shack sales Rep's fault!

Got Motorola S9's. Will not pair with Treo 680 with or without Softick. Pairs with AT&T Tilt perfectly. Will take everybody's advice and use them inside...

I think I have the sweat issue eliminated now that I wrapped the side controls with a single layer of electrical tape. I had quite a few workouts and so far (knock on wood) I think I have kept the moisture out of the controls... Also, you cannot even see the electrical tape since it matches the black casing.

Now I wish they would work better when using them while running outside. The bluetooth antenna doesn't pick up my treo 700p in my pocket very well... cuts out on almost every stride. I have to wear a fanny pack and have the phone behind me.

Re: waterproof...same problem here...use mine to workout. After a few months, the unit started beeping and the controls stopped working. It seems I have the same 'shorting' problem others report here. I'll call Moto and ship mine back.

Love the headset but hope they get the message loud and clear...the unit needs to be truly 'water resistant.'

These headphones are not worth the price. The first pair I bought lasted about a month and then crapped out. (Device features would not operate properly-volume, play/pause button, answer mode, etc.) So I figured I just got a bad pair. Took 2 MONTHS of going through Motorola to get a replacement under the warranty that they are on!! Finally got my second pair, and after about another month, these just stopped connecting to my phone via bluetooth. I am now 3 weeks into getting Motorola into sending me another pair. Most unpleasant $140 I've ever spent!!! If you've purchased this item, good luck with it not going bad on you...and if you're considering purchasing this item, you cannot say that you haven't been warned. Good Luck!

I also tested with Nokia N73M. Works perfectly fine..

Here are a few things that I discovered when testing the S9.
1. Not a big problem but phone sound is mono not stereo. Just wasn't expecting it.
2. When using the ipod adapter (D650) I have to perform the following ritual.
A. turn off my Bluetooth on my Treo 650 phone.
B. Turn on the headset by holding the button for 4-5 seconds.
C. Unplug the D650 ipod adapter from my ipod.
D. Turn on Ipod
E. Re-plug D650 adapter
F. Wait for 10-12 seconds before devices are paired.
G. Turn phone Bluetooth back on.
H. Check my voicemail just to confirm that S9 re-paired with phone.
I. If not re-paired with phone then go through pairing process again with phone and hope that it did not cancel out the ipod.
J. pray that headset does not stay dormant for any length of time. If so then start back at "A" again.
3. If a call comes in then ipod pauses and I take the call, when call is done then play resumes. However, If I am on a call for any length of time then the ipod goes into a sleep mode. Ipod will not resume by itself nor by using the play button on headset. You must find your ipod and push the play button there first.

I have several good points about the S9 as well that have mentioned in other reviews so I will spare you the redundancies.

Hi there:
I bought a S9 but after I used for a short time it begans to discharge the battery too quick, so I decided to open and replace the battery. Do you have any idea about the type and specification of it and where could I buy it?. Thanks in advanced.

I too have had the same problem with the S9. After running for 30 minutes, it would develop a short. I tried two of them through Target and encountered the same problem. I then bought a bluetrek through Amazon, although they lasted longer than the S9, they too literally fell apart I guess because of the motion associated with running combined with the sweat. I really loved both headsets, but you would think that these people would make sure that their products work, and that we would not have to do the testing for them. Could anyone out there actually reccommend a set of Stereo Bluetooths that actually are made for running and sweating?

out the door to buy pair three. (well, exchange, anyway.)

someone mentioned somewhere something about spraying the insides (of different bluetooth headphones, but headphones nonetheless) with shoe waterproofer. anyone daring enough to try? otherwise we're all going back to wires, if we wanna keep running that is...

The S9 was very uncomfortable for me. Whenever you tilt your headback the ear buds would dig into your ear. If you wanted to lean your head back against a chair or pillow forget it. If you also have collared shirt forget it it bumps into that as well and digs into the ear. Sound quality was fine and if you just want it to workout then get it, but from reading other forums it tends to crap out with a little water. I brought my back.

I had the same problem with the volume controls after working out with 2 pairs. Just going to return them which is too bad because I really like them otherwise.

I purchased the S9's about 4 months ago with a service contract. They are great when they work, as I have had to take them back and exchange them a total of 4 times and I am about to take them back again. It seems that any amount of perspiration shorts out this units buttons, sometimes permanently. I can't get a refund, so I guess I'll just keep taking them back!

HELP: So i purchased the Motorokr for my centro (I downloaded the necessary A2DP software). The headset works well for streaming music, and all of the music related controls work. However I cannot connect to a call. The headset just slowly flashes red (as in idle), and never bluetooths to the phone portion. Any suggestions?

Waterproof with 'Party Balloons' [the twisted animal ones], color choices galore!
Or clear plastic 'tubes' [that new stuff come packaged in to prevent scratches]...

Thanks for the info (all) about getting Palm Treo 755p to Stereo A2DP Bluetooth for Motorola S9 with Softic Audio Gateway (et.al.)...

The design of these headphones is great....small, stay on while running, etc....A+. The Quality however is the worst I have ever seen. I have gone through 3 pairs in the past 2 months, each failing for different reasons. I can see one pair being bad, but 3???? Another company needs to copy this design and build it anywhere but China, preferable in the US so there is some kind of quality control. You will never get that with products made in China. Here where I live you can get a pair for $39.99 and it comes with a 1 gb card and a starbucks card. I think they finally realized that these were just junk and are trying to get rid of them. If you can buy one for 1 dollar, then you are wasting your dollar.
