Listening to your Treo: JAVOeBuds Review

I have complained at length about palmOne's decision to build a 2.5mm audio jack on our Treo instead of a 3.5mm one as well as to conveniently not include stereo earphones in the box so that one needs to either buy the adapter (I have one but consider it to be one of the ugliest piece of kits) and/or buy a pair of earphones with a 2.5mm plug (but which one?).

I don't know if you'll feel the same but one of the most annoying things about any set of earphones that I've had is the issue of the tangled cords - particularly when you need it for a device that you always carry with you such as the Treo.  I came across the JAVOeBuds a while back and was attracted by their 'retractable cord' but having had many poor experiences in the past with this type of system I was not at all sure that spending $18.95 on it would be worth it.

Having now tested them for a couple of weeks I can however categorically, emphatically, 100% say that yes the JAVOeBuds are indeed worth it.  In fact, I am now so impressed by how well the retractable cord works that I want to get the 3.5mm version as well as a headset version (not yet offered by JAVOedge).

They're so amazingly convenient to use that I can only wonder why all other earphones do not come with this system - it takes literally two seconds to go from 'fully extended' to 'fully closed' and vice versa.  The 'spring system' allows you to select up to six different lengths for the cord - stretching to 120cm/47 inches at the max.

Extended.

Closed.

The other great thing about the JAVOeBuds from a design perspective is that the casing for the cord is made out of some sort of high-strength rubber material instead of the cheap plasticky ones that are often found elsewhere.

BEFORE: Adapter + Earphones = A Mess   AFTER: JAVOeBuds = Utter Simplicity

Naturally the second part of the equation was determining whether the actual earphones and the sound that they produced was any good.  Again I was pleasantly surprised.  Not only is the sound good but the earphones are ultralight which means that even after hours of listening they still feel extremely comfortable in the ears.

I'm now so happy with these that I've been showing them off to people whenever I get a chance - pulling them out of my pocket, extending the cord to the max and closing it again to demonstrate how neat the whole thing is.  There are undoubtedly other earphones out there costing multiples more than these that may sound a lot better (I have a few myself) but they won't have the retractable cord nor the 2.5mm plug.  For my part, the JAVOeBuds are now in my pocket wherever I go listening to my MP3's, streaming radio, Audible programs, watching movies...

Overall, I'm happy to give JAVOeBuds retractable stereo earphones 5 Treonauts Stars  and also add them as Editor's Choice.

You can buy the JAVOeBuds for $18.95 here at Amazon or on the JAVOedge website.

Dear all,

You mean if we use a Javoedge 2.5mm earphones we can actaully do away with the adapter and still get MP3 music out of the Treo 600?

I disagree. I have had two pairs of these headphones and was very unhappy with the quality of the materials and with the customer service of Javoedge. When i reported that the retractor had broken within two weeks of receiving the headphones, they said that their was no warranty or guaranty. In other words they don't stand by their own product.

Personally - I HATE these earphones. While I love the retractable cord (and use one for my sync/charge needs) the earphone quality and comfort sucks.

I just wish I could use my Sony Fontopias without adapter.

First of all I would like to compliment your awesome site and the last Treo 650 photos (THANK YOU FOR THE 1.3MP THING!!, hope you can post a pic taken with cam please!)

I would like you to test drive the Seidio 2-in-1 headset please. are retractable too but have double functionality. I've heard some debate on them so I would like a clear and trustable review like the one you did about Javo headphones.

Thanks and keep up the excellent work!

Lure_Angler (matthew),

I searched our database and did not see an order under your name. Are you sure you ordered with us?

There is not one that we have refused for an exchange.

I don't believe what JavoEdge tells you; I have experienced the same lousy product quality and poor customer service as well.

I got them for $10 on Amazon. They are hard and uncomfortable. I might need ear canal surgery so they will fit and not fall out. Also the plug always comes out of the bottom of the Treo 600, unless I hold it in with a rubber band. I had to do the same thing with the adapter, so the expected improvements really didn't pan out.
