PalmOS Jumps to #2 Smart Phone OS Ahead of Microsoft

I guess that the timing of this news could not be sweeter for both palmOne and PalmSource...   Ahead of tomorrow's unveiling of the new Treo 650, MSMobiles reports that the PalmOS (driven by sales of the Treo 600) has jumped to #2 in the smartphone league finally leaving archrival Microsoft in third position.

Symbian leads with 87% share now followed by PalmOS with 7% and Microsoft (MS Smartphone & Pocket PC) with 4%.

As we reported previously in our 'Treonauts Challenge', palmOne's (hardware) and PalmSource's (software) medium-term objective must be to grow their share of the smartphone market to reach 50% by 2009 at which point they would be selling some 70 million Treos per year...  The news of their increased market share today is a promising indication that the companies are on the right track.  We'll naturally keep monitoring developments very closely.

It looks like you have an ATT Treo 650, can you confirm this?

Hi Craig,

Yes, the unit that I was playing around with earlier today was indeed an AT&T unit which I have to assume means that they will not be too far behind Sprint in releasing their own Treo 650.

Cheers, A.
