Another Smart(ish) PalmOS Phone
Amidst all the commotion of the Treo 650 memory issue last week, I missed to mention the launch in Asia of another Treo cousin. Namely, the GSPDA Xplore M28 which is the company's third PalmOS smart(ish) phone (if it doesn't have a keyboard it shouldn't really be labeled a smartphone).
While the M28 may be keyboard-deficient it does boast 64MB or RAM plus 32MB SDRAM Flash internal memory card and naturally also the SD Card slot for yet more storage.
As per the picture below, the phone is shaped candy-bar style and benefits from a sliding numerical keypad for phone dialing and text input. The screen is relatively small at only 2.2 inches but the overall form factor keeps the phone light at 132g (versus 178g Treo 650 for example). More importantly GSPDA have successfully completely done away with the antenna on this model but it is only a dual-band (900/1800) GSM/GPRS device compared with the quad-band (850/900/1800/1900) Treo 650. Also, the handset has its own USB port for Hotsyncing and ships with a combo headset/stereo earphones for calling and listening to music.
Running PalmOS Garnet, the M28 benefits from all the functionality that we enjoy on our Treo including email, browser, SMS and MMS. GSPDA have also bundled both an MP3 and movie player with MPEG4 playback as well as Quick Office to view MS Word, Excel and PDF email attachments. In addition, the phone also has Java support.
Although the phone will not be available in the US, the M28 may be an indication of future palmOne Treo family models. Certainly for those people not needing the full keyboard functionality for email or other data entry but who are instead looking for the convenience of a combo phone/PDA such devices could prove to be extremely popular. At the currently advertised price of some $500 at Expansys in Hong Kong though it can certainly not yet be considered to have mass-market appeal.

I have to admit the lure to buy this phone model is very tempting. As it has everything Treo has with more memory better ergonomy package and nicer color (I love black). But it has no thumb board, and the screen resolution is not high res (320x320) by the looks of it... The phone model if I'm not mistaken already available in Malaysia or Singapore... Forgot, my boss travels around those country alot and he say yesterday he saw what he describe a black G88, but there's no black G88, only silver one, so that must mean this model.

I respectfully disagree (strongly) that a smartphone without a keyboard isn't a "real" smartphone.
The "smart" in smartphone is not from the phone, it's from the palm. I have managed almost 7 years (since Palm III) without a keyboard, so I definitely do not require a keyboard on my Treo 650, should it ever be marketed here in Europe.
I need a palm with real phone-functions.
Meanwhile, the keyboardless SonyEricsson 910 is heavy marketed, and sells (like hotcakes in Sweden)!
So forget the keyboard thing: its heavy marketing and 64 mb that really counts.

michael - that could be a previous model. I previously saw a similar unit in Malaysia, but it was running os4 not 5. (helped me feel a little happier about my treo 600, which i'd bought only 2 weeks earlier).
For my part, I disagree with Finno. I am using my Treo 650 in Europe and the US and could not handle my email requirements without the keyboard. If I didn't need the keyboard, I may have gone to a Pocket PC version (gasp!!!). I think the keyboard is the intricate portion that drives the functionality of a smart phone versus a phone with an OS. This is just my 2 cents.
