The Future Treo Display(s)

Back in August last year I wrote a post describing what I imagined might become the mobile industry's next 'Big Thing' and by extension the future of our beloved Treo.

My idea, still sketchy at the time, was that any content or application on my Treo could be seamlessly 'extended' to a PC monitor or TV set in close proximity.  Moreover, I also suggested that given increasingly larger projected bandwidth availability via our Treo the time would one day come where our smartphone could be used to work with remote applications and thus increasingly altogether substitute a PC.

We're not there yet but a very interesting recent article by Guy Kewney at The Register - in which he briefly covers a viewpoint heard in Symbian - closely resembles what I had in mind:

The future of phone displays is going to be "whatever display is nearest."

They [Symbian] believe that at some point in the future, the phone in your pocket will merely be your "authority" to use a display. If there is a wide-screen plasma display in the corner, you can (for a small fee, perhaps) switch from your phone's own tiny window on the world, into a far bigger view. Or if you sit down at a desk with a PC on it, the data will remain the same, but the keyboard and display will shift from your hand-held, to the desktop.

I can't wait for the future to arrive and already dream of the day that we'll all be using our Treo this way.

Sorry that this is not relevant to the original post. I couldn't figure out any other way to submit a suggestion. I would be very interested in an evaluation/comparison of GPS Navigation systems on the Treo. I've seen the new iGolf(?) product but it seems to use the SD slot for the device meaning I cannot use maps loaded on an SD card as the slot is occupied. I understand there is a Belkin Bluetooth Navigation module which leaves the slot open for a large card to store the maps

Would it be possible to discuss/compare different GPS navigation options on the Treo?
Thanks, Tom

Interesting. I've always thought that the future of portable displays is either something you wear like glasses, or in flexible plastic displays that can be folded up or folded out to provide a large display when needed but also fit in a pocket...

Do you have any info on unlocking a locked 650? I'm getting a Cingular version and hope to be able to unlock it.

Any suggestions?

Mike
