The WiFi Threat

Although one doesn't have to be a genius to figure out why WiFi and Dial-Up-Networking (DUN) have been 'temporarily disabled' on Sprint's and Cingular's Treo 650, a recent report by Strategy Analytics helps to put things in perspective by reporting that there are as much as "$12 Billion risk of lost profits facing North American wireless carriers".

"It is not only a question of lower cost alternatives for high-speed wireless access, but of more intense price competition for an expanding number of operators," says Harvey Cohen, President of Strategy Analytics. "Operators, including Verizon, Cingular/AT&T, and Sprint/Nextel will make more than $100 Billion in investments into advanced wireless capabilities over the next four years, but the returns may not be as high as initially expected due to the growing intensity of competitive forces. This increased competition is good news for wireless data users interested in multimedia applications. Lower effective rates will accelerate total demand, while keeping operators from their financial goals," adds Cohen.

what they've consistently forgotten is that it's the "users" that drive the industry, and NOT the carriers. the demand is for wi-fi is real, not imaginary. i want my wi-fi access and i'll go to whichever manufacturer/carrier is going to best support it. i don't like be told how to use and how not to use my pdaphone by the likes of cingular wireless.

and it's not just the wireless industry either. technology is a blessing and a curse. it's continually evolving. those that choose to remain stagnant and not adapt to market demands will die off. look at the panic on the faces of the music and film industries.

who wants to carry around little plastic discs or buy bulky set-top dvd players when they can rip/archive the data to their laptops or pcs and stream it over their media centers?

While that's an interesting theory, it does not really hold up. P1 is just lame.

HP makes PPC devices that work across network types and include both cellular data and wifi access.
