One Week to Go for Verizon Treo 650?

While we just 'know' that the Verizon Treo 650 is due 'sometime' between mid to end of April, the latest rumour flying around actually provides us with a specific date of April 20th - a short 7 days away this coming Wednesday.

Judging by the number of requests that I get for updates on this and seeing that everyone is just so anxious to get their hands on one I've decided to take the risk to be wrong and have set a Verizon Treo 650 countdown for April 20th on the right navigation column.

Soon there will be a big spacecraft load of new and upgrading Treonauts!

If Verizon is not your preferred carrier then you can currently choose from the Unlocked GSM, Cingular GSM or Sprint CDMA versions of the Treo 650.

Treonauts welcome all soon-to-be friends...

Andrew:

Currently, I'm in Ireland and Vodaphone seems to be the market leader in wireless. After heading into one of their stores a few days ago, I found out that they offer unlimited data plans for 25 Euros per month, which is a little less than $30 USD. It's very interesting that Vodaphone, the joint-partner of Verzion, that is known in the US as VZW offers unlimited data plans for so much cheaper. In fact, Vodaphone has the only 3G network in Ireland...

The other thing that caught my attention is that vodaphone customers can use their phones on almost every continent - via roaming - except for the US. In fact, I called a friend of mine who lives in London on his cell phone and he answered in Capetown, South Africa. We talked as clearly as if we were in the same building with a full signal.

As my VZW cellphone sits in my hotel room, b/c I can't use it, I am strongly considering an unlocked GSM Treo 650. This experience has really opened my eyes to how "globally" useful the Treo 650 could be to me on the right network.

>Hope I didn't offend anyone on this board, but I'm sure such an experience would have you considering the same and eager to share that information with someone.

Jaison,

Like you I'm rather taken by the unlocked Treo 650... particularly if you're travelling across Europe where GSM is prevalent.

Richard,

Which site is saying May 7th?

Cheers,

Andrew

Andy, are you still wanking in the drawing parlour? Didn't mum tell you to quit that? Now, be a good chap and lick up all your spunk.

Well, store info cards and Verizon website notwithstanding, I spoke with five different reps today, including calling Verizon directly. They all seem to think that the 650 is months away from a Verizon release. One said that the Verizon Treo 650 would be released shortly after the new Treo is released for Sprint. My contract expires with them soon and I am eligible for New Every Two. Sprint doesn't have any coverage where I work and precious little PCS coverage anywhere else and Cingular has zero coverage where I live. It's Verizon or tin cans with cord. I guess Verizon tested the tin cans with cord and found it too advanced for their system to handle? How much longer before I go all ballistic and get the Verizonized Sprint Treo? The day after I do, they will no doubt announce the release, so I just sit with my dumbphone, twiddling my jittering thumbs and wait for the Verizon 650 like a junkie in need of a serious fix.

They also never heard of the Samsung i730. So the VX6600 is IT? Yuck!

Will the serial port bluetooth profile work on the verizon 650 so that I can use a bluetooth gps unit?

The Verizon Treo is not out today, and the PalmOne store told me a couple of months. Does anyone have any news about what is really going on?

OK everyone... as I mentioned in the post I was taking a risk that today might not actually be the date and I was wrong even though there were indications that it could happen...

I will undoubtedly keep you update the very second I hear anything new on this front...

Sorry, I know that everyone is anxious about this...

Cheers, A.

It's the 7135 release all over again. Two weeks, no, three...no, a month, no...six weeks for sure, no...

I finally gave up and bought a 7135 from Alltel. You'd think Verizon could actually manage to coordinate a release, but no...

I just received the Treo 650 as a gift, so I am really an amateur as it comes to Treo and Palm operated PDAs.
I currently have a cell phone with T-Mobile and my contract doesn’t expire for another 6 months. I don’t want to switch to Sprit (My Treo if from Sprint) until my T-Mobile contract expires. The problem is that I still want to use my Treo as an entrainment tool until I decide to use it as a cell phone. The programs that I am interested are TCPMP (for movie playback), Mobipocket (for e-books) and Pocket Tunes Delux (for mp3 playback)

My question is : can I download all the software that I want to use on my PC and then transfer the software on my Treo? OR do I need to have a data-transfer (internet) plan for my Treo and download all the programs directly on my Treo? I would really like to use it now to watch movies and listen to music, as opposed to waiting until I have a plan with Sprint.

I e-mailed a district sales manager at verizonwireless regarding the availability of the 650 and he got word from verizon saying the 650 will be available the end of april or beginning of may.

We shall see.

If I purchase a TREO 650 unlocked GSM, will Verizon activate it? Can I get the same rate plan I have now? Any input appreciated.

Rick

Just an idea for those who can't wait for Verizon to get thru tweaking the 650, buy it outright from Sprint for $420, pickup a copy of Popular Science May 2005 $4, for the info on how to convert it to work with Verizon, and have them activate it for $30. This issue has a nice article on the different smart phones, carriers and services available right now. The article on hacking lists some websites like shadowmite.com where you can download the software and info to convert it, unlock it, access hidden menu functions like networking to share an internet connection and much more. Check it out!! good luck, sj
