Verizon? Not yet on the Horizon...
A recent Google search referral perfectly represents the complete frustration that many are feeling waiting for Verizon's Treo 650. The keywords in question were "f******g tired of waiting for treo 650 for verizon wireless"...
Once more, I find myself in the annoying situation of having to report that there is still no sight of our Treo on this much anticipated third US carrier release. Furthermore, now that I've been wrong on the launch date twice already (apologies) I would rather not make another prediction but instead let the combined wisdom of all Treonauts determine it.
Let me explain. I am reading a fascinating book called "The Wisdom of Crowds" which among others discusses how a reasonably large and diverse group of people can make extremely accurate predictions. Well, I can't think of a better opportunity to put this to the test than to let you take a shot at guessing the most likely date for Verizon's Treo 650 consumer (not business) release below.

OK forgive the stupid question, but how does this work??

Verizon is already received the accessories for the Treo 650. Which, per a sales associated at Verizon, means it should be out this week.
I'm betting that it's going to be out in the next 13 days. That statement has nothing behind it. It is however, the bet that I made. I stopped by a Verizon store this past weekend and picked up a Treo 600 - and put the charge on my account. The charge, if you can believe it, is still the original list price ... not the $250 that is listed on their website, but $4XX and they were "nice enough" to give me a break down to somewhere in the high $200s. But I don't care what they've charged me though. I've picked up the 600 for 15 days so that I can get used to having a Treo, synchronizing, customizing, etc. I'll return it as soon as the 650 is out (or my 15 days are up).
Just called sales. For the first time they had an actual answer for me- May 23 for consumers.
just told it has been available for 2 weeks for VZ business accounts? They said it was supposed to go out today for consumers but they pushed it to next week.
Whomever told you it was available for business accounts is wrong. I have a Verizon business account and the 650 is NOT available. Furthermore, my rep has not yet been given a release date.
Just received a call from insider at Verizon. If you have a corporate account, the Treo 650 will be available on May 11th. If you have an individual account, the Treo 650 will be available for you on May 26th.
Funny how everyone's been given different dates!!!!
Seems like Verizon is "leaking" different release dates, so depending on who you talk to there, or at one of their stores, we're getting different dates. Wonder if the release is really that close, or if they're just enjoying all the misinformation being exchanged out there.....
This is a clear indication of the difference between a journalist and blogger. Bloggers "report" rumors and hunches. A journalis reports facts.
Jack,
Forgive me for disagreeing... Surely you must at least once have read a journalist in the mainstream media report that "this product is 'rumored' to become available on...".
The main difference with blogs is that they are typically the very first to report such rumors (and facts!).
Cheers, A.
GREAT NEWS! I have a corporate account with Verizon which brings in a significant amount of money. After discovering Monday the 650 had still not been released, I sent a somewhat nasty email to Verizon citing my displeasure and noting even Earthlink was ahead of the game. Interestingly enough, I received a phone call today (not an email) from Verizon management reassuring me the release of the 650 on May 11th. He indicated the May 11th date will include all consumers, not just corporate accounts. While there are a ton of rumors floating around out there, I feel confident this information is accurate. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
Mark, I too was told from a rep at my local store that he knows for SURE that the 650 will be launched for ALL consumers at the same time!!!! He did not indicate a release date, but at least we both were told the same story on one topic. Good news I think, but still not going to count on it. He also said that he thinks it will be launched before the end of May.
All of the reps I have talked to (more than a dozen in the last two days) have said that they have no idea when the Treo 650 will be released. It could be any time between now and the end of the universe.
I talked to our Verizon Business Account Rep today. He says that they still are being told they will have the phones on the 10th and I'm the first person he is shipping one to on the 11th. He doesn't know anything about the retail dates.
For what its worth... I just spoke with a Vzw store sales rep in Arlington, VA, who told me the 650 would be released on May 23rd. He wan't 100% confident it would happen, but said Vzw had given them that date. I note that the 23rd got a "peak" number of votes in the poll.
The 650 is available to day for business customers. My sales rep just sent me the FedEx tracking number for mine that shipped today. It will be here tomorrow AM.
Just got off the phone with my rep, she is ordering my 650 first thing tomorrow morning, (May 11). FINALLY!!!!
Hi,
As I told you guys before in a previous post, I announced the May 11th release date for business customrs of the treo 650. I just ordered mine and will receive 2 of them thursday morning!
Got it!!!
This is really a much nicer phone than the 650. Graphics are way, way better and I already have my bluetooth headset and bluetooth palm synch with my Powerbook set up and working flawlessly.......great smartphone.....so far anyway :-)
I don't have a verizon business account rep. so I dn't have an inside track for the most current info.
What did you pay for the phone? More importantly, are they offering discounts on the phone if you start a new plan?
Hi All,
Could anyone answer how the cell phone reception is on a Treo 650?
I own two blackberry’s and the phone reception is awful, however the email functionality of the blackberry is awesome.
