Finally: Cingular Treo 650 ROM Update!!!
Although some Treonauts bravely ventured for Cingular’s Treo 650 Unlock Hack other less daring ones were probably beginning to think that this day would never come…
Nevertheless, Palm and Cingular Wireless have today finally made available an official update to the Treo 650. Cingular Wireless Treo 650 customers will be notified of this update via an SMS. Users can access the software update and installation instructions via Palm’s dedicated support page.
The software update (version 1.15) provides improvements in several areas including:
- Optimizes memory handling and frees up more memory with non-volatile file system improvements.
- Includes VersaMail 3.0c, the latest version for Cingular Wireless Treo 650
- Adds voice quality enhancements
- Includes "Get Good" application which facilitates faster, wireless installation of Good Technology’s GoodLink email software for business customers
- Improves battery life by automatically turning off the screen after 30 seconds of a call. Most users will not notice while the handset is next to their ear, but this power-saving feature lets you continue your conversation with the display off. The power savings will vary depending on usage patterns. To turn the display back on at any time, tap the screen. Do not press the red Power/End button, unless you want to end the call. The screen-off feature applies to handset mode only, not speakerphone or headset modes.
- Incorporates two software patches previously released on Palm's website:
- Carkit Update for Treo 650 (Bluetooth carkit drivers)
- Treo 650 Voicemail Updater 1.04 for Cingular Wireless
As with Sprint’s and the Unlocked Treo 650 updates in June, I’ll add more information to this post as soon as I receive some feedback from the first Cingular Treonauts who take the plunge. However, I anticipate that we will hear of very similar improvements to previous updates including:
- Further memory management improvements
- Keyboard lights brightening and dimming along with the screen
- Dialling out becoming dramatically faster (but still ‘small’ lag)
- Voice dialling delay is completely gone

Ooops… Last week I also apparently missed to mention that a firmware update 1.03 had been release for the Verizon Treo 650…
UPDATE 1: Dial-Up Networking (DUN) is now fully enabled in Cingular’s Treo 650!
Treonauts always want to be updated…

Installed without a hitch... so far...
I backed up to my 1G card with BackupBuddy VFS before I started, but using the instructions on the web site seemed to work ok...
Only glitch was having to reset Xiino as my default web browser. If I have any problems in the next few days I'll check back in again.
Followed installation instructions and everything is in perfect shape so far. AWESOME!!! My internal memory went from 9.3MB to 13.7MB. It gave me 4.5MB more space granted some of this is from doing a hard reset but I am sure most of it was from the update. WOOHOO!!!
Update:
1) Memory is larger
2) Applications are opening way faster (test this by opening your camera and take a picture, save it and then take another picture immediately after). the standby time is virtually gone.
3)Some apps that require IBM websphere saying it needs Websphere installed to work, Webcam to name one.
All in all if you are a Cingular customer the update is GOOD TO GO! Just make sure you have the original application files to reinstall programs if needed.
Well, I'm on vacation for two weeks following the birth of my fourth. Thus, I can't risk any update issues right now. However, considering that I have a Cingular phone and the update supposedly allows BT DUN, I'll be updating myself. The catch is that I previously updated my Treo to the AT&T ROM, so it'll be interesting to see if it let's me put the Cingular ROM on it...
Keyboard lights changing with the screen brightness? NO!!!! IT'S GONE!!!! sucks!!! Keyboard lights stay at their maximum brightness no matter the screen brightness
Did anyone actually get an SMS from Cingular? None here so far. I'm also wondering if this will bother my already installed GoodLink.
No SMS, though I got 3 emails from my 3 sales contacts at AT&T Wireless. For GoodLink, use the GL backup tool to backup to the SD card first and all should be good. Otherwise, you'll need to be re-provisioned. :(
OK, installed the update. Now why is my screen so dim? Why?! Why?! Why?!!! aarrghhh!
you better get your free SDIO card before they remove that for the branded treo 650s also.

Used the hack from a previous posting to unlock my Treo. Does anyone know if:
- I can use this new update to undo the hack?
- Is there any reason I should try to undo the hack?
Thanks!
Installed without a problem on my 650, using the special instructions for GoodLink customers.
Only problem I see so far is that SD card access seems to be a LOT slower than before.
My Versamail still crashes/corrupts...device still resets for no apparent reason still....and now...now my phone application wants to turn off automatically, sometimes 20 seconds after I turn it on!!
Anyone else having these problems?
I installed the update, now my Motorola HS850 BT headset has issues. None of the answer and redial features now work after a short period of time. I have to blow out the BT prefs cache and pair it over again, this will allow it to work for an hour or so... and then all the features stop working... im bummin, anyone have any BT isuues after upgrade? :(
I successfully installed the upgrade and all is well. However, I tried to get the DUN working and to no avail.
It says opening port and then dialing... and then just hangs there, and finally returns with an error 692: there was a hardware failure in the modem...
I used the following settings:
user name: [email protected]
pwd: CINGULAR1
phone #: **99***1#
Has anyone had any success using DUN on the cingular treo 650??
Update was smooth and I'm finding all the benefits that Palm described for the Treo 650. I had no trouble re-pairing my Motorola Bluetooth headset, etc.
Only problem: Right after the update, while running XpressMail, the phone asked if I wanted to update the software to a newer version - like an idiot I clicked yes - and now I can't view documents over XpressMail like I could before and I don't know if it was the firmware updater or XpressMail that changed. Strange. Cingular customer service, and they flatter themselves with that title, are clueless. (They weren't even aware that XpressMail was THEIR SERVICE)
Anyway, there used to be a function "view" to see the doc's and now it's gone. Huh?
Xpressmail has never done me any good since it doesn't allow pictures attachments...
Chris: instead of using the **99***1# string for the phone number, try using wap.cingular which works fine for me.
Since I updated to Cingular 1.15 everything is fine except my phone goes completely mute when trying to make or receive a call. If I install headphones or headset, sometimes I can listen to the call. If during the call I remove headset, I can then listed through the handset. The same happens also athe other way around?
Anyone with a similiar problem? Anyone with an answer to it?
The 1.15 seemed to turn the phone from a full duplex speaker phone into a single-plex speaker phone. That is, you'll have to take turns talking. Is that what you mean Julizzette?
Anyone else notice this?

I have the same doubts runingwithbulls.com has. I did the hack here in Mexico, and I haven't been able to make the phone work with a mexican SIM card. The problem seems to be that the network band option in the phone menu is not available. Any help? Thank you!
Sorry, the post I was referring was Carlos2, not runingwithbulls.com
Thanks
Carlos - the 'unlock hack' will not unlock your SIM card but instead only change the ROM from that of your carrier to the one which comes standard on Palm's Unlocked Treo 650.
The principal benefits are the enhanced NVFS memory management and it also enable Bluetooth Dial-Up Networking (DUN).
Cheers, A.
WARNING: Major problem with Updater 1.15
-----------------------------------------
I just applied Updater 1.15 to my Treo 650 (Cingular). Now my phone doesn't work some of the times. When I receive and/or make calls, the other person cannot hear me. It's as if the phone is on mute. It doesn't work with a headset (earphone) either.
This is a huge problem. I can no longer rely on my Treo. People cannot hear me many times. Is there a way to undo this update? I may need to uninstall (remove) this firmware update and go back to 1.04. I never had this problem before. However, I did have people hear themselves (echo, feedback) on some calls.
DUN does't work for me
-------------------------
DUN (Dial up Networking) doesn't seem to work either. I've tried differnet number numbers without any luck.
**99***1#
wap.cingular
*99***1#
username: [email protected]
password: CINGULAR1
After the update, versa mail crashes all the time and the whole system reboots. Any solutions?
I added the update with no issues. Managed to get the DUN working using the details from shadowmite except using *99***1# instead. The other thing you need to do is change some of the modem settings as described in a pdf doc from palm (Treo650_GSM_DUN_UG.pdf).
I have two issues now though. My caller id has stopped working and the earpiece is significantly quieter than it was - so much so I can hardly hear the person on the the phone - I've been told by on-line chat with cingular I have to call them and they will connect me with palm.
