Treo Retractable Sync & Charge Cable
It’s funny (in the best of cases) how often one technology solution can create an entirely new (not immediately obvious) problem to solve.
In this case, my favourite Bluetooth headset has been palmOne’s Compact Wireless Headset because, among others, I could use it with my existing Treo charger instead of having to move around with a second separate one.
This arrangement with the dual-use standard charger worked perfectly well until a few months ago when I switched to using Seidio’s Retractable Sync & Charge USB cable – which I much preferred because it is smaller and creates much less cable clutter.
The issue now is that while the retractable S&C cable works great to charge my Treo it is nonetheless totally useless for charging my Bluetooth headset which only requires the power and not the hotsync portion of the cable (see image below). I have therefore had to use both the standard and retractable chargers simultaneously which was, well, kind of stupid.
Naturally, I thought that there must be a solution for this and so we started looking around for options. I had ideally thought about a single retractable cable that could charge both my Treo and the Bluetooth headset at the same time but this proved difficult and impractical from a product development perspective.
A few months later, Seidio have come out with the next best solution which has now been added to the Treonauts Shop. Namely, they have just released a simple retractable charge cable (top right image) which can be used for both our Treo and the headset – albeit not at the same time.
Personally, I’ll be using both retractable cables with two USB ports on my laptop or alternatively also a USB wall or car adapter and hopefully I’ll now be able to completely do away with my clunky old standard Treo charger.

Funny, about a month ago I had reason to do a little do-it-yourself work and make my own y-adaptor for the Treo charger. Basically I cut the ends off of two chargers, stipped the cables back, then wired them together from one wall unit. So now, with a single wall unit, I have two power dongles that can be plugged into both my Treo and a Palm BT headset. Perhaps I should make a bunch and sell 'em. :)
The best thing about the Motorola headsets is that when you fold them up, they turn off, and thus don't use battery. I go weeks without charging. Weeks.
Since you're talking about headsets (sort of), I wonder if I can ask a question:
I have two (!) Palm Treo headsets (the silver one) that don't work for the same reason: after a few weeks, the wires seem to get worn out from being bent back and forth and first my conversations keep cutting in and out and then I can't hear anything. The strange thing is that the headset that came with the Treo still works.
Do you know where I can get the other headsets fixed and adjusted so they don't break again?
Thanks!
I'm glad you covered this - I realized the dilemma right away after I got the Treo bluetooth headset and started shopping for the most efficient charging option. I haven't for either of the retractable options yet, but this looks like a good compromise. I would like to see a hotsync adapter like on the stock charger that would let you carry just one retractable cable. I charge the Treo much more frequently than the headset and it defeats the purpose of the common charger for me to have to carry two cables - even if they are small.
hey, i realise this is the wrong place to ask this question, but can i edit a word document on the treo650 whilst talking on speakerphone to the office? this is the one reason i would buy one...
