Yahoo Pursues Mobility

Following my earlier post about the general lack of Treo-optimized websites, I was particularly glad to read news that Yahoo! is actively working to expand its presence “beyond the desktop.”

In partnership with Motorola, Yahoo! SVP of the Connected Life business unit Marco Boerries states that the company “is focused on providing its millions of users with the opportunity to connect to their Yahoo! services on the devices they use.”

Although a number of senior Yahoo! executives have mentioned to me that the Treo is an extremely popular device within their organisation there is no specific mention of Treo-optimized content or service developments at present.

Instead, Yahoo! and Motorola intend to offer both operators and consumers Linux-based mobile devices optimized for direct access to the full suite of Yahoo!’s leading products and services – expected to become available to consumers in major markets starting in 2006.

I don't know if you guys heard about this - but you can access a mobile version of Yahoo! now, using the following URL:

For international:
http://wap.yahoo.com

or for US direct:
http://wap.oa.yahoo.com

I'm not a huge Yahoo! user, but it seems to have a lot of content: Mail, Messenger, Games, News, Sports, Finance, Weather, Movies, Driving Directions, Address Book, and even Calendar.
