Treonauts at CTIA

As I’ve mentioned, the coming week promises to be extremely interesting while I’m in San Francisco (I just arrived) for the CTIA conference which starts on Tuesday.  Perhaps more importantly Palm will hold a joint press conference with Microsoft and Verizon Wireless to which I have been invited on Monday morning where it is now all but assured that the companies will announce the Treo 700w running Windows Mobile 5.

I can imagine that many Treonauts will have a ton of questions on their minds for both Ed Colligan and Bill Gates as well as Verizon Wireless’ CEO Denny Strigl.  Just let me know what these are and I’ll try to put as many of your questions forth during the press conference or in the following days at the CTIA show.

What does that link above mean for our Treo?

I'm hearing the pressconf right now, and together with the openletter I think Palm (the hardware company) will stop with PalmOS on their Treo devices.

I sure am glad that I spent the time to put my questions down for you. Did you even raise your hand? Homeboy at treocentral was 2nd to ask and the guy from PCWorld got 2 questions in. Where were you? Did you pass out in the back row after realizing that Palm OS6 ain't happening and Windows Mobile is going to buy ("market") it's way through the next year. Damn Windows Mobile!!! Can we please just get Steve-O to kick down an OSX Mobile (codename Kitty-cat) to balance this Palm disaster. I hate you Ed. You suck. That guy from Verizon is a rimjob too. I hate Verizon too. ahhhhh!!! Someone please post the Cobalt code. Let's take this into our own hands. Revolution! Who's with me? OPEN UP THE COBALT VAULT!!!

Jorge - _actually_ Treocentral got two questions from Michael and Marcus while I was the only one along with the guy from PocketPC to get two individual questions (PC World only asked one)...

My first question asked Verizon's CEO if they planned to continue their support of Treo PalmOS devices in the future. He replied that they would continue to support the Treo 650 but he did not commit to future PalmOS Treo smartphones.

My second question to Ed & Bill was related to Palm's improvement to the Windows Mobile OS. I asked whether Palm would retain an exclusivity to these improvements or whether they would in the future become available across all Windows Mobile devices. Ed replied that they would try to patent new technology if and when possible but that above all he is interested to keep Palm competitive with leading innovations.

I hope that this will help to clarify the issue of me being 'asleep'...

Cheers, A

My apologies, how dare I?... as I only watched the event in hopes to hear you in action. But, I apparently was the one asleep because while I do remember those very important questions being asked, I just didn't hear the "treonauts.com" tag. I'm Sorry. I'm sure you noticed that my post was an unappeasable angry rant that occured without much thought, anyway. I just can't believe that it looks like Palm OS is being phased out. Unless there are conditions within the ACCESS deal, I can't see any company that would be successful, selling a Palm smartphone after this. Of course, I also can't believe ACCESS would put down that kind of cash if they didn't think it was still salvagable either, but come on... Where does Palm OS fit in now? Maybe on the lifedrive or other pdas, but who the hell wants a palmpilot anymore. The smartphone is the successor to the pda. The 2in1 factor combined with the easy computer (Mac) integration is the only reason I dropped my p900 and dove back into the palm pool. This will kill the large palm OS based smartphone market. You heard all the benefits of Win Mobile. Better reception with the software improvements, EVDO speeds, possible camera upgrades... A 650 or whatever Palm OS5(yes, 5, that's how it looks) treo that succeeds it, especially on the gsm gprs networks, will look foolish. From a consumer standpoint, I couldn't rationalize not getting the WinTreo... and I hate that I'll be almost forced to do it. That interface sure looked like fun to use too... and WOW picture dialing... ooooh what's next there, predictive drawing to find contacts. If I draw dorky glasses with my stylus will it narrow down my contacts to show only people I know that wear glasses. What if I add a big nose ... and a bad haircut... this is stupid! My 650 isn't great, what was great was the Treo's evolving potential. The platform just looked like it would get better and better. Not good... better... and then totally different! A smartphone for smartphone users, today, became a smartphone for windows users! Thanks for kicking us out of your party, jerks! (sorry, I'm having a bad day)
