New Treo 650 Cingular Updater 1.17
Yesterday Palm released its latest Updater 1.17 for Cingular’s Treo 650 which fixes some past issues as well as providing new performance enhancements. These include:
- Includes VersaMail 3.1c, the latest version for Cingular Wireless Treo 650, which includes an updated Mail Service (ISP) list.
- Adds support for Gmail attachment downloads via web browser
- Optimizes Bluetooth performance for some Motorola headsets and other car kits
- Adds voice quality enhancements.
- Optimizes memory handling
- Correctly saves Auto-off power setting. This addresses an issue experienced by some users after installing updater version 1.15
- Adds an audible beep to indicate call initiation failures
- Improves battery life by automatically turning off screen after 30 seconds of a call (originally included in Treo 650 Update 1.15). The power savings will vary depending on usage patterns. To turn the display back on at any time, tap the screen. Do not press the red Power/End button, unless you want to end the call. The screen-off feature applies to handset mode only, not speakerphone or headset modes.
- Incorporates three software patches previously released on Palm's website:
- Treo 650 Updater 1.15 (released July 2005): Provides non-volatile file system improvements (info); includes "Get Good" application which facilitates faster, wireless installation of Good Technology’s GoodLink email software for business customers
- Carkit Update for Treo 650 (Bluetooth carkit drivers)
- Treo 650 Voicemail Updater 1.04 for Cingular Wireless
Overall it appears that Treonauts have been extremely happy with this update and report other fixes from those listed by Palm such as:
- An attachment problem with Activesync and Documents To Go is resolved
- The long dial tone (DTMF) problem has been fixed and the volume is louder
- Fixes the bug which would turn off the screen after 30 seconds even when the auto-off was set at 1 minute or more in the Prefs
- Additional free memory
As always please make sure to carefully read the Updater 1.17 instructions for Cingular’s Treo 650 before proceeding but overall this is a fairly simple and painless process which should take about 20 minutes to complete.
Treonauts are even happier after an update…

couldn't have come at a better time. i was having some serious issues w/ versamail yesterday [reboots galore] updated to 1.17 and everything is gooood [knocking on wood]
Do you think Palm will release another update for Sprint?
Great it really is time for an update. I'm using the factory unlocked 650 GSM and even though I'm using the latest update - its starting to get frustrating. The occasional reboot or just phone off - plus every day I probably check my voicemail maybe 20-30 times a day. I HATE the long DTMF tones - there is just no excuse for this. It should have been fixed almost immediately after the new ROM months ago.
So when is the fix for Unlocked coming? Or are the "best Palm people" busy working on stuff for the Windows Mobile version.
Sorry I guess this comment has turned into a bit of a rant.....I love Palm and have been a Palm booster for years - introduced many people to the Treo 650 as well. However when people ask me if I reccomend the 650 I have to admit I hesitate - I have a love/hate relatioship with mine. It's only the second Palm I've had problems with (the first was the Tungsten W). All other Palms have been stable and good.
Comon Palm give everybody an long awaited update.
Great site BTW - I'm here alot to see whats new and exciting for the Treo...
Peace,

I have a Cingular 650. I also see the brightness of the keyboard light varies with the screen brightness. Or was that in there already and I missed it?
Everytime I try to update, I get the message
in my HotSync Log
Components of the Treo 650 updater are missing, please reinstall the upgrader if you wish to upgrade your device synchronization failed
Is this because I am still an ATT user?
Hello,
I enjoy the Treonauts site. I just performed the firmware update and my poor Treo 650 is caught in a soft reset loop every ten seconds. I disabled all the apps and files that Palm recommended and it didn't help. Any more troublesome apps on the list you all can recommend? The update went fine until the very end. Now the handheld is useless until I break this loop with a hard reset.
Suggestions?
Thanks

Hello,
I'm still working on my endlessly cycling update. It's got its own mind, and it keeps on cycling through resets. Strange.
I had already installed MissingSync for the Palm OS and instead of using Palm Desktop to backup and reinstall, I used the Missing Sync to do the hot sync. Perhaps I have to uninstall it and start over using the Palm Desktop conduits?
Anybody else have this problem?
Peace,

I use the Cingular network when I am in the USA and several other when travling in Asia( China, taiwan, Thailand etc). Any one tried using this updater on an unlocked Treo 650?
Any warnings not too run this updater on an unlocked Treo?
I have about 6k contacts afew 3rd party apps, and have to reboot/ restart etc @ least 1x/day due to frozen screen or the Treo does it on its own ( darn mail app!)
Luv my Treo, HATE the restart/ frozen issues.
I followed instructions from uneasysilence (http://www.uneasysilence.com/how-to-upgrade-locked-cingular-gsm-to-unlocked-gsm/) a while back to "unbrand" my Treo. Things worked out great, but the new updater has features that I would like to have. I was wondering if anyone else out there has had any success upgrading from a : "Treo650-1.13-ROW" software running phone to the new Cingular software.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.
I am not able to install Goodlink after the update. I can see all the apps have been installed but I get a screen that says Setup Progress and the bar is nearly complete on that
and Status: Synching Data and it says 90%
It has been that way for nearly 24 hours.
Has anyone else run into the same issue?
After applying 1.17 to my unlocked Cingular I ended up with firmware version 1.51 and software version 1.17CNG and an apparently LOCKED Cingular 650. I reapplied the Subsidy Unlock Code, but the phone still seems to be locked. I don't have another carrier's sim card to try, but before the update, once the phone was unlocked, under phone info I had an additional choice, "Choose network". This option is no longer available. Also I had DUN and that has disappeared, as well. Does anyone know how to tell if the phone is still unlocked? I don't want to get to Europe and not be able to use a prepaid sim card. TIA
Very frustrating day yesterday installing the 1.17 update - finally success, but I had to use the ploy that we used with 1.15... I set up a dummy user, hard reset and installed the update using the dummy, then restored using my real user name. Works like a champ now, only issue was having to unlock some books in "eReader." BTW, Palm was very helpful in getting me through this.
Also... the update is not supposed to change the locked/unlocked status of your phone, and Cingular gave us DUN with the last update - it still shows up on mine, but I use PDANet anyway.
I installed the update on my Cingular (former AT&T Wireless) locked Treo 650, and all worked well, including Good. However, the screen flickers on/off every 30 seconds or so. Anyone else experience this? Any known fix to this?
Hi-
Just installed the new update for the treo 650 - cingular. The phone seems to work well and I was mildly impressed with data restore after the upgrade. I've lost all my login settings for PDANet and my versa mail settings were gone from my activesync account. (Easily re-entered except I don't have the pdanet login info.)
Most noteably - my phone has lost the caller id capability. When an incoming call arrives, there is no data displayed on the screen. Also, when I make a call from the address book, the name and number info do not display. If I manually dial a call, that number is again, not displayed.
The best part - Cingular doesn't have support on Sundays. I'm going to try Palm and see if they can help. On a positive note - the dtmf tone issue is fixed and it would seem that (perhaps coincidence) my previously poor signal at my home is no longer poor.
I just updated my AT&T Wireless Treo 650 with version 1.17 and am having problems with Nav Man. Using version 4.4 of Nav Man, and can no longer get it to recognize that I have a bluetooth GPS device. Somehow I doubt that it is a Nav Man problem, seems directly related to the update.
Any suggestions as to what might have went wrong?
Thanks,,,,
This is a warning that Treo_650_Updater_1_17g.zip for Cingular Treo 650
has at least one major bug (actually I've heard of several but this one
I really know about). Even if it installs correctly, it breaks IR
hotsyncing such that a warm reboot occurs when you hit the hotsync
screen if the Treo has been to sleep since your previous reboot. [Which
is essentially always, unless you've just attempted an IR hotsync.]
I'd be pleased to hear from folks about bug fixes, but till then my
strong advice is simply don't use this updater.

After installing updater (which went fine, none of the continuous
reboots that some folks have reported). Attempts to hotsync using IR and
the hotsync palm screen cause immediate reboot. The second such attempt
works without reboot. The reboot will occur if the palm goes to sleep
between the reboot and the attempt to hotsync.
I talked to the updater phone support at 866-677-7256.
They said they suspected a corrupted file or incompatible add-on.
Recommended a hard reboot. So I did that (wiping all my data) but it
made no difference to the hotsync-reboot bug. Was still there.
They said that meant I had a hardware problem and to call Cingular
(right! that sounds likely). That's all the help they could give.
Since I did not believe that diagnosis, I simply reinstalled the 1.15
updater, which by good fortune (wisdom?) I had not deleted. Although
that update took a couple of tries to go through, it did so eventually.
Then my problem disappeared.
Ergo this really is a problem with the updater (as of course was obvious
all along). I'm afraid that I have not got the time to go through the
whole 1.17 install again to prove that the problem is reproducible (and
hence not some kind of hardware-related file corruption).
Bottom line again: Don't use 1.17g updater!
Meantime, Palm/Cingular folks, do you guys track this group? If so then
take note, and send us some information about what is really wrong with
the updater. Better still, fix it!

Hello, I have the treo 650 for Cingular Wireless. Should I consider switching to Verizon Wireless to expirience the treo running Windows Mobile or should I wait for Cingular to come with their new version. If it's really gonna take until June or so for Cingular, I'm strongly considering the switcheroo...
Everything went fine with the update, but I am still having the power shut off after 30 seconds even when I have it set at 3 minutes. I see someonelse posted this problem, any thoughts?
Don't use this update if you hope to use EXTRA TONES for speeddial on long entries. I used it in the previous versions to store phone card information and after the update the automated system does not accept the number entries. The old version used to but not the new version. Then if I enter the numbers manually, the automated system tells me 'wrong entry'. When I do it on my home phone, it's fine. There it's a 'POP' after each phone button tone that I think throws automated systems off. I'm trying to uninstall this!
Need help ! Just got a Treo 650 version 1.17CNB cingular, but it won't reconize my sims card out my Razr phone. I was told I need to use version CNG. Does anyone now where I can get or what steps do I need to do to fix this issue or how I can reload the CNG version into the phone? I am using Cingular service currently.
THX,... :O(
Just did the update on a 650 w/ GoodLink software. Initializing GoodLink, then launching versamail and then viewing an email causes a crash everytime. Completely repeatable. Anyone know how to deal with this problem?
please email with any advice.
thanks!
Dave
Updated Cingular phone to version 1.17. Now my phone will not sync with my Sony Ericsson HBH 662 bluetooth headset. Anyone else have this problem? I called Palmone and they said "this is not a compatible headset". But it worked fine before the update!!
I had the hotsync-reboot cycling problem. After a year of no hiccups, whenever I hotsynced to my PC, my Sprint Treo 650 would start to reboot over and over. But I did a hard reset, installed the 1.13 updater (from 1.07) according to Palm Support instructions and so far everything is working again. Crossing my fingers.
if anyone still has the file to install 1.15 i would really apreciate it if u would give me an email
I bought an unlocked Cingular treo 650, and is using TMobile as my carrier. I installed the patch 1.17, and now everytime I click on the Documents To-Go icon, my treo resets. Has anyone experience this?
