Treo 700w Review: Part 1

Please visit our Treo Store to find the bestselling Treo 700w accessories and Treo 700w cases for your smartphone.

I’ve now had the opportunity to play around with my Treo 700w for a little over a week and I’m slowly getting a sense of what it can do and how well and easy (or bad and complicated) it is to use on a daily basis.

First I must state that I have no previous experience whatsoever with Windows Mobile or Pocket PC devices and so I will be unable to compare the performance of the Treo 700w to competing devices powered by this OS.  Instead I will be using my beloved Treo 650 running PalmOS as the benchmark for evaluating the forthcoming Treo 700w.

My intention is not to write about “the battle of the OS’” pitching PalmSource against Microsoft but to evaluate both pragmatically and neutrally.  It is evident that some Treonauts will categorically prefer either PalmOS or Windows Mobile without much consideration for performance and usability while others will carefully weigh the pros and cons of each to decide which Treo to purchase.  There is no doubt that both the Treo 650 and Treo 700w have unique pros and cons that will each be more or less appealing to different Treonauts and as you’ll discover in my review the ‘perfect’ solution combining the best of both worlds is still not in sight.

Below are the main areas of performance and usability of the Treo 700w that I will be taking a closer look at and review in the coming days:

  1. Synchronization (Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1)
  2. Today (Home screen)
  3. Phone (Calls, Speed Dial)
  4. Contacts
  5. Calendar
  6. Tasks
  7. Notes
  8. Email (part of Messaging)
  9. Browser (Internet Explorer)
  10. SMS and MMS (part of Messaging)
  11. Pictures & Videos
  12. Windows Media Mobile (Movies, Music, TV, Streaming Audio & Video)
  13. Word, Excel and PowerPoint Mobile
  14. Pocket MSN (Messenger, Hotmail)
  15. Verizon Wireless Sync
  16. Programs
  17. Settings
  18. Bluetooth
  19. WiFi

In this first part of my review I will be taking you through my experiences with the Synchronization and Today functions.  Additionally, in parentheses I have added my opinion of how each function compares to our Treo 650.

1. Synchronization with Microsoft ActiveSync 4.1 (Better)

Installing ActiveSync on my PC was done in a few minutes and after following the simple instructions and setting my preferences (I chose to sync my Outlook Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes leaving out the email, IE Favorites, Files and Media options) I was ready to sync my Treo for the first time using either my existing Seidio Retractable Sync & Charge cable or the standard Treo 650 cradle.

There are a number of things that I particularly liked about ActiveSync such as the fact that it syncs in the background without the annoying, distracting and even stressful Hotsync progress windows that appear on screen under PalmOS – I could easily keep working without noticing that a sync was in progress.

Additionally, the Explore button in ActiveSync easily allows me to view, add or delete files on my Treo 700w.  Similarly, you can also access the files on any SD card inserted in the Treo 700w so that it becomes a useful USB card reader – I really love this and wish that it was available out of the box in our Treo 650 instead of having to use a third party program such as Softick Card Export II

Under Tools there is also an option to quickly Add/Remove Programs and perhaps more importantly was the very cool finding that once your Treo 700w is connected to your PC it can automatically share its Internet connection saving you from having to use data minutes if you don’t happen to have an unlimited wireless data plan (it’s kind of the same setup that I use with reverse BT DUN on my Treo 650 but much, much easier).

2. Today (Better)

There is much to like about the Treo 700w’s Today screen even if it could be considered to be somewhat cluttered with too much information if you decide to add all of the options that you can have which include: Lookup Field (Type name or number), Date, Speed Dial (Text + Picture), Owner Info, Messaging, Tasks, Web Search, Pocket MSN, Calendar and Picture.  I personally chose to add everything except Owner Info and Picture (which was making my Today screen run extremely slow…).

As on the Treo 650, typing any character will automatically start a Contacts search.  However, the Treo 700w has a few minor but neat additions such as the fact that the contacts begin to appear in a pop up (see below) within the Lookup Field and that it also has a smart feature which allows it to determine whether you are trying to dial a number (below right) or search a contact.  Unfortunately, as with the Treo 650 you can only perform a First or Last Name search and not a Company which I find annoying on both devices.

Next is the Speed Dial section which offers you the option of dialing via either Picture or Text as well as a Quick Key for any existing or new contact that you want.

Below this I have added the Email and Tasks which I can access via either the 5Way button or simply with my thumb on the screen to open each respective application.

One function of the Today screen which I particularly like and which immediately makes the most of its high speed data connection is the Web Search box in which you type anything then hit the return key to see a couple of seconds later your query results from Google… very neat.

I haven’t yet properly setup my MSN account and so I will have to slightly skim this part but I can quickly tell you that the icons for the MSN butterfly, house, messenger and mail respectively open 1) an MSN jump page; 2) the MSN Mobile web page in IE Mobile; 3) MSN Messenger and 4) your Hotmail account.  Any existing MSN user will undoubtedly be absolutely delighted to see such a tight integration on the Treo 700w.

I can also tell you as a bit of a preview that I was able to follow a link here from WindowsMedia.com which allowed me to perfectly stream both TV and video on the Treo 700w…

Lastly I have my Calendar function at the very bottom of the Today screen which like the Email and Task will take me to the application with either the 5Way or my thumb on the screen.

I hope that this will have given you a good overview of how ActiveSync and Today work with the Treo 700w and how it compares to the Treo 650.  Also, even though I write that I consider both these functions to be ‘Better’ overall than the similar ones under PalmOS in our Treo 650 there are nonetheless other ones which I will review in the coming days that are definitely not so.

UPDATE: Treo 700w Review Part 2 is now available.

UPDATE: The Treo 700w is now available to purchase from the Treonauts Shop for only $299.00 (after mail-in rebate and 2 years new voice & data account).

Treonauts always take a close look at things

Tip for the Picture speed dial for those that want to use it. I noticed the same slow down when I tried it on mine. However after resizing my contact pictures to 45x45 it appears to have gone away. The default picutes showed in the blog entry are about 27kb. Resized to 45x45 they go down to 2kb. Hey you associate enough pic's to contacts and 27kb adds up.

Rey - You can't. Verizon doesn't want people to "tether" their phone with their laptops...so they didn't allow for that functionality. :(

Rey - I ran into the same problem. I think it's a bug, and will need to be fixed with a patch.

I've had a problem with my bluetooth automatically connecting to my handsfree car kit. Sometimes it connects automatically, and sometimes I have to reset, and reconnect. It's insanely annoying. And I definately think that they could have given us more "settings". I can't even set the car kit as a trusted device....and I think that's the problem.

Sammy - The big tado wasn't that windows mobile 5.0 existed, but that it was running on a palm device. Also, while there are many phones running win mobile that have tons of functionality, they aren't treos...and they don't have the benefit of having palm's engineers working with ms to create one handed operation throughout. Not to mention that die-hard palm OS fans have been quite a bit violated by this move. Can't really blame them either.

Will the 700W work with Lotus Notes?

You can use the treo and a laptop for DUN. (linking treo to the laptop to use the treo as the modem)

Goto treocentral .com's dicussion board and search for DUN.. I forgot the link.

I bought the TREO 700W today and have been learning about the various features. I am impressed with it BUT I live in a somewhat remote area and down in a valley. With my Motorola V710 which has tri-mode capability I was usually able to make and receive calls. I can't complete calls with the all digital 700W. It will connect and drop within a few seconds. If I can't resolve I may have to return the 700W. Karl

Does anyone know how to make wireless sync stay connected?

by Anthony | Jan 13, 2006 6:30:30 PM

Update to all. I spoke prematurely on the bluetooth problem. I had to reconnect the first few times I got in my car with my bluetooth car kit. However, since then, my 700w has connected without fail everytime I get into my car. I don't know what the problem was at first, but whatever it was, has worked itself out without my intervention. I'm glad too because that could have been a deal breaker.

I picked up one of the new 700W phones yesterday and have been pretty impressed with it (coming from an older Palm cell phone).

I have had one issue with it though - in syncing with my exchange server via laptop over Nortel Contivity VPN client, the activesync connection is shut down by the VPN software for security purposes.
Apparently the 700W's activesync software uses IP to communicate with the phone over the USB cable. However, the VPN client software deliberately blocks all IP network traffic with non VPN networks (ie, the Treo 700W).
With the PalmOS HotSync - the connection was not using IP networking - and it could sync with the remote Exchange server over the laptop's VPN connection.
Anyway - this aspect of the Treo 700W's interaction with VPN software could be problematic for those of you looking to sync over a laptop VPN connection.
I did find a PocketPC version of the Nortel Contivity VPN client software (http://www.nortelnetworks.com/products/01/contivity/multi_os/)
- but this is for a different version of the OS, and probably for a different processor.
Anyway - the phone so far is great, but this VPN issue could be a problem when syncing on the road via laptop.
Any thoughts or suggestions on a workaround for the VPN issue would be appreciated.

Help! I want to get rid of my blackberry and become a Treonaut! Here's my delima...650 or 700? I am familiar with the windows mobile os but I don't want that from preventing me from getting the "better" device. I'm looking to purchase in the next couple of days. Please help!!

I have moved from a Palm T2 to the 700w. I can't figure out how to get around the calendar without using the stylus. I'd like to go from day to day in the month view and scroll up and down in the week view but the month view jumps whole months and the week view jumps weeks.

Is ther a way to do this without the stylus?

Thanks

Bought the 700w last Thursday and have been loving it.

I have never used the palm os in the past so I can't compare one system to the other, but I really like the form and function of this unit. You can do almost everything one handed, without a stylus.

I bought this primarily because of its EVDO capability and it is FAST.

By the way, you can tether it to your laptop, as I am at this moment. PDANet, by bluefabric, already has a downloadable program specifically for the 700w. It is quick and easy to install ( 5-10 minutes and I was up and running ). You use your sync cable to tether to the laptop ( they said bluetooth will come but USB is much faster)

Free to try and $ 35 to buy

palm had to make the screen with the 240x240 resolution. Windows Mobile has to be square and only supports 2 sizes- 240 or 480.
You will still get as many lines as the other products. The smaller screen also gives longer battery life.

I love everything about this phone, but will not be able to keep if I can't resolve this email problem. I have different accounts that all allow for POP access and have got all to work (sending and receiving). The problem I am having is that when I POP with my 700w, it downloads the mail into the inbox of the account I have created (seems to be working fine). When I go to POP again with my server, it deletes my entire inbox??? I spent a few hours on the phone with PALM support today and their guess was when the PALM connects to the POP server, it sees no new mail and essentially syncs the current inbox to reflect that of the POP server(no new mail). I am wondering if I have a bad unit or this is normal? I have set all the accounts up to display the messages of the past three days, but I can't seem to get it to display the messages I received from the last POP five minutes ago? Specifically, I have set up my GMAIL account POP to keep the messages in the inbox vs. deleting, so I am not quite sure why it continues to wipe out my inbox every time I go to check for new messages? HELP! Thanks

I saw several comments about synching personal and public folders, but no answers. This seems to be a common problem. Is there a recognized solution?

Cannot get the gmail connection to work. I think I am having issues with the incoming and outgoing POP servers. I saw somewhere on the Gmail site to just put local host there.

If anyone has a link or some info...I would appreciate it.

The 700W is a nice upgrade from my older 600.
One minor issue: I accidentally added a new IMAP account that should have been Pop - guess what - once it's saved you can edit everything except mail type for the acct and I can find no way to delete the account. So, I can't fix the account by changing it to Pop and I can't delete it!
Anyone know if I'm missing something or know of a config file I can manuall edit?

After having the phone for a while, I noticed that the time zone information is set wrong. I have the phone configured to pick up the time (and time zone) information from the cell phone network (Verizon) - and it is picking up the wrong time zone.

I live in NY state - which is ET, but it is showing up as Indiana time. I spoke with Verizon about this - they had me do both software and hardware resets with network resyncs - but no luck.

We even talked to Palm tech support about this issue - and they observed the same behavior during training on the phone in Florida. So this problem is not unique to my phone settings - or my specific phone.

Has anyone else seen issues with the Treo 700w's time zone settings from the Verizon network?

I just wanted to add my $0.02 here.

I just got the 700w in order to respond to our customer service email more quickly - and also to remotely ssh to our server for admin issues.

1. anyone using IMAP, who also has a good deal of files in their home dirs will have issues. Apparently you cannot tell the 700w to index only certain dirs, and it will recursively go through them all - rendering the device basically frozen.

2. Using multiple IMAP accounts, even if you set the 700w to check all accounts every 5 min. it will only check the account you are currently viewing or have selected - the others will need to be manually switched to and checked in order to see if you have new email. I still havenot figured out a way to have the device automaticlly check all the email account you set up. It would be very sad to have to use some third party app as a work-around - like having your server send a special text message to the 700w in order to tell the 700w to check your email account for new mail.

3. It appears that the 700w only indicates (on the today page) new emails that arrive in the "inbox" and ignores other sub-dirs. This notification issue may be an IMAP server config issue - I havent explored that possibility yet.

4. There is no Push-esque functionality here - real time email notification is no where to be found. You can apparently set the 700w to check your email account (read point 2 above)
at regular intervals, even every minute, but then you will not be able to make or recieve calls. Whenever the email is being ul/dl you are cut off from calls. Only when the connection is established, and idle, are you able to make/receive calls. Very annoying if you are waing for an important email to arrive while talking to someone.

Please keep in mind that these findings are only from 1 days use. During this time I had to "soft reset" the device about 6 times due to the IMAP issues causing the device to hang forever.

Anyone have experiences similar to these?

Help!! I have been using the Treo 650 for about a year and am not happy with the quality of the phone. The reception on my daughter's cheap phone far exceeds that of my Treo. Callers tell me that they cannot hear me clearly and many times, the calls are dropped. I have been to Verizon about this and they say the phone is working properly. If this is not resolved, I will be forced to abandon the format all together.

I have been using an Axim pda for years, and a seperate verizon phone. Wll this new Treo 700 be able to satisfy both needs. Also can I use my current e-mail address with this phone?

Any input would be appreciated.

This is my first shot @ a smart phone, love the pc but HATE the phone. I am on the phone 40 to 50 hrs a month and can live with a shorter battery life but will no longer put up with Verizon and their excuses for dropped calls. I should have known better friends have problems with Verizon coverage, as soon as I can get a GSM version from Cingular I am going to change over.

I have the new Treo 700. I have the Outlook-connector installed but I can not seem to syncronize my calendar or contacts. My emails sync just fine. My Outlook contacts have gone to my MSN account but not the calendar. When I go to the Active Sync and select options, the Contacts choice is light gray and will not allow me to select this option. The calendar choice is checked but still does not sync. Help? Thank you

With the new Treo 700, will I have to get a new e-mail address, or can I use my current one? My current address is not with Verizon.
