Treo 700w Specs Clarifications
A couple of days ago someone questionned the veracity of my specifications for the processor and memory of the forthcoming Treo 700w running Windows Mobile so I thought that a few screenshots of the actual details might settle the matter…
As someone else pointed out, the processor on the Treo 700w is slightly different than on the Treo 650.
They are both from the same Intel family and operate at 312MHz, but the PXA272 found on the Treo 700w includes an on-chip memory cache (Stacked memory of 512Mbits Intel Flash in 32-bit memory bus) while the PXA270 on the Treo 650 does not.
Being a later generation chip we have to assume that the Treo 700w will have a comparatively higher performance to the Treo 650 but naturally with different OS’ this may be hard to assess.
Finally, I had to perform my first hard reset on the Treo 700w after installing Skype and being unable to uninstall it – but I did successfully install a new version that I’ll review separately which does work. In the process I discovered that the hard reset method is exactly the same on the Treo 700w as it is on the Treo 650. Namely, while holding down the power button, turn over your Treo so that you can see the back of it then still holding the power button, use an unfolded paper clip or a similar small object, to gently press the RESET hole on the back.
Lastly, a comment left in my previous specifications post pointed out how annoying it is to re-install your applications after a crash. I don’t have much experience on this front and have (luckily) not had a crash but I can tell you that my version 4.1 of ActiveSync does not have the Backup/Restore option enabled and therefore I cannot set it to “Automatically back up each time the device connects”.
Treonauts always question facts…

Thank you for the added information. One question comes to mind. What apps are you running that take up 14.61MB of RAM? Since the 700w has 32MB RAM one would expect the OS to load and leave us with 25.45, BUT, are we only getting 25.45MB before we get the OS loaded, are we getting really ripped off by Palm on this, did they really screw this up. I have an email into PPCtechs about a 64MB RAM upgrade (had it done on my hw6515 WM2003SE and it was awesome).
Thanks.
Regarding the backing up of programs - MS removed the feature from AS for mobile devices newer than MS Mobile v 2003. I have a smartphone w/ Mobile 2003SE and there is no backup option. However, in practice, this really isn't too much of a problem, as long as you save the original install files for all your programs on your computer. AS will reinstall them the next time you sync.
Question - since you did a hard reset, did you have to reinstall any programs? I thought that one of the new features of WM5.0 was that hard resets don't erase programs.
Correct that is a feature of WM5, but you still need to be able to hard reset the device back to factory settings especially when apps run afoul or conflicts. So I was also curious about the hard reset vs factory default hard reset.
gtom - a hard reset does erase all "third-party" (ie not factory set) programs while a normal soft reset does not.
Also, I did not experience ActiveSync automatically reinstalling the programs after a hard reset.
Cheers, A.
Hmmm, well thats good to know then. Andrew any info on the memory shots you posted.
Thanks.
Can you confirm if the 700w has the messaging and security service pack already installed to allow for DirectPush from exchange servers that have been updated with SP2?
Question: Does the 700W have the same dimensions as the 650? Also, what do you like about this phone more than the 650 besides the Windows OS?
Since I live in Singapore, do you know when (after Jan 5, 2006) I can buy a 700w that I can use here? I suppose that means I would need an unlocked version?
VZW Employee at howardforums posted that it has: 128MB Flash/60MB RAM
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=803423&page=1&pp=15
It seems as though the unit Andrew has may be a pre-production unit for developers, I just hope it is and VZWEmployee is on the mark.
Hmm, he states (http://blog.treonauts.com/2005/12/treo_700w_final.html) that is is "brand spanking new production unit" but lets hope its not!
Then the memory doesn't add up. VZWEmployee is stating 60MB of RAM and thats from the Verizon computer screens. We need to know now, not later.
How are the phone and headset volumes? I'm coming off of an Audiovox XV6600, that never seemed loud enough, so this is important to me. Thanks.
Can you get a 700w WITHOUT a camera? I need one without the camera.
hey i was wondering if the new treo 700w will support aol instant messenger email me if u have any idea at [email protected]
does the Treo 700 have voice dialing. I just picked up a spec sheet from the Verizon store but it doesn't say and none of the reps there know. Its a feature thats important to me, before I preorder I would like to know.
Yes to AIM with third party apps...
If the 700w comes with Voice Command as people have been saying it does then not only does it have voice dialing but soo much more. If not you can add VC.
The Treo 700w includes Microsoft Voice Command. It is turned off by default, so you have to actually turn it on via the control panel and manually associate a button with it. I was in the Verizon store today. I set up Voice Command to use the "multi function" button and turned it on. I then used a voice command to dial a number and it worked great.
Where can I find a a download for aim/icq client for the windows based 700w /// drop me a line
matt /at/ ioiinc.com
I have a 700W (Boston area), just got it a couple of days ago. I can't seem to figure out how to associate a button with Voice Command. And if so, where can I find a manual or spec sheet on VC, there is no mention of it in the documentation that was shipped. (Verizon Wireless)
Any clue?
Does anyone know where I can obtain an unlocked 700? I don't want to switch from TMobile and they say they will not be offering this phone.
Any thoughts?
There isn't an unlocked GSM version yet, all are Verizon CDMA phones
Hey Rob, check out the cheat sheet for Voice Command located at http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64244
also, to associate a button, go to control panel ->personal->buttons, pick a button and select "Voice Command" from the drop down list. Also, you should go to the Voice Command control panel and select "enabled"
