Treo "Hollywood" = Treo 800p?

UPDATE (June 12, 2007): Looking for information about the new Treo 800 form-factor?  See my latest post Treo 800w New Treo Form Factor First Images!

There’s one thing that we know for a fact: the new Treo 700w is but one of a total of four new Treo smartphones _confirmed_ to be released by Palm in 2006 [read Treo 2006 Product Pipeline Update]

In December, Palm CEO Ed Colligan stated that “Our continued investment in R&D will not only allow us to add the Windows mobile platform to our product line [Treo 700w], but we will deliver next calendar year [2006] four new major smart phones at varying price points, and we will implement next generation radio technologies and offer new industrial designs.”

Additionally, Forbes reports that Caris & Company Equity Research analyst Susan Kalla “believes the new Treo 700 with the Palm OS may be delivered in April, before expectations of May, and may also be released initally at Verizon.”  Adding also that “Palm will have three new international phones and at least one new [Treo] could be for Vodafone”.

However, we don’t yet know exactly:

  • When they will become available
  • Which carrier(s) will be first to release these
  • What these new Treo smartphones will look like
  • What their specifications may be

A brief recap of the rumours surrounding these four new Treo smartphones may be in order:

Availibility + Carriers

  1. January 2006: Treo 700w (WM 5.0, EV-DO) currently available exclusively from Verizon (CDMA) until June 2006 and from other carriers (CDMA & GSM) thereafter
  2. April 2006: Treo 700p (Palm OS, EV-DO) exclusively from Sprint (CDMA) for 6 months and from other carriers (CDMA & GSM) thereafter
  3. March-May 2006: "Hollywood" - rumoured to be called Treo 800p is expected to be offered primarily by Orange and/or Vodafone in Europe and in US likely to be launched by Cingular
  4. March-May 2006: "Lowrider" - a sub-$300 device and entry-level smartphone, compatible to previous-generation network radios (like those found on the current Treo 650)

Looks + Specifications

  1. Treo 700w and Treo 700p are expected to share identical specifications to the obvious exception that the first runs Windows Mobile while the second runs PalmOS. Also the screen is 240x240 in the first and 320x320 resolution in the second.
  2. Treo “Hollywood/800p” is expected to be a slimmer and fancier 3G/GSM smartphone without external antenna to appeal to European customers (see image below) and some quarters claim (take with a pinch of salt) that it will include:
    • More memory: 128MB RAM
    • WiFi option via WiFi SD Card
    • Bluetooth 2.0
    • EVDO/3G (HSPDA?) Data Connectivity
    • Enhanced 320x320 touchscreen
    • 3.2MP camera
    • Faster processor
    • Accessories compatible with Treo 650
    • Slimmer form factor and ‘sleeker’ design
  3. Treo “Lowrider” – no data or rumours available to date but this could be a simple low-end modification of the Treo 600 or Treo 650

Even though there are little more than rumours at present, one thing is for certain: there are millions of existing Treonauts who like me are anxiously waiting to upgrade to the next generation PalmOS Treo…

When's this thing going to be announced?

The keys on the Treo are so tiny (I recognize that some people don’t have a problem with this). But to have it undo what you’ve done, forcing you to do it over, is very frustrating.
