Another $450,000+ Treo Camera Snapshot...
Following my encounter with the stunning Porsche Carrera GT in San Francisco barely ten days ago I have now once again ‘stumbled’ upon another one of the world’s most expensive and exotic cars while walking the back streets of Knightsbridge in London this afternoon.
This time around, Treo camera in hand, I was lucky enough to come face to face with one of the few $450,000 base price, 0–60mph in 3.8 seconds, 200mph+, 617bhp 5.4liter V8, carbon-fiber body Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren which in black is more than a little reminiscent of a Batmobile – particularly when its gullwing doors open upwards…
Like with the Carrera GT previously, this is the first time that I’ve come across the SLR – a car which Money magazine claims is “harder to find than weapons of mass destruction and just as volatile”… Only some 200 are currently in the US and probably even fewer in the UK so the likelihood of bumping into another one soon are rather slim.
The other thing that is rather spectacular about the SLR (without the benefit of ever having driven one) is that it is assembled in the stunning, high-tech, Lord Foster designed, award-winning McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, England. A visit to the centre alone should make it worth spending nearly half a million dollars on this car… I’m definitely calling my bank manager on Monday…
Treonauts always look for something exotic…

Cool car... Yes. But a huge waste of money.
The money used to buy this car can provide 450,000 meals for starving people, or better yet be put toward causes such as finding a cure to aids. Sure, maybe this person has given considerable amounts of money to such causes, but $450k can be put to better uses. Treonauts are alway willing to help out those in need...
Yeah, no one should ever spend any money on anything nice or expensive for themselves. It should all go to charitable causes. No one should own nice houses or nice clothes. And sure as hell no one should spend extra money on a Treo when they could get a cheaper cell phone. For that matter, why waste extra money on cellular service?
haha. Nice post Kevin! I like your enthusiasm and rebuttal! hehehe
Yes, this is an awesome car, but I shutter to think that Paris Hilton gets to drive one...
Sorry, but I can't leave this alone. So according to you, kevin, there's no difference between spending the money to buy a Treo and the money a car like this costs? Hmmmm. I see a big difference. I have to agree with proee - this is just too much to spend on something like a car. This car isn't just 'nice', it's extravagant.
But thank you for respecting the opinions of others.
I love this car. But there are better ways to spend 450K. For example, I'd probably buy two ferraris instead. I have seen the SLR in person several times. When we bought my girlfriends benz they had a black SLR in the showroom. It was roped off with a sign stating: sold, do not touch. I asked our salesmen who purchased it, and he told me Ed Synder (owner of Philly Flyers) just bought two of them.
I wish you would stop taking pictures of my cars. I live a private life and dont need my cars posing for pics on your site.
;)
You should have stopped at the Mercedes dealer on Van Ness while you were in San Francisco, they have one parked by the front window. Asking $695,000. Only a quarter mil over MSRP. :-)
I'm not sure if you're correct in your statement about bumping in to them. I've sat in one (prototype, sadly didn't get to drive it) and caught a glimpse of another on the motorway here in the UK (near Warwick). Probably aided by the fact that the UK is alot smaller than US raising the chances of bumping into exotic cars, and also the fact that McLaren and Jag test alot of their cars near enough to where I live. Best bet is in London, where the wealthy play, and where TopGear drives around alot.
Regards,
Andrew.
There's a silver one of these roaming the streets of Seattle that I've seen a couple times but have yet to catch on film. Damn stiff louver mount! Some cute blonde drives it.
