Treo 700p FINALLY In My Hand!
You would imagine that I might have been one of the first Treonauts to get the new Treo 700p but as fate would have it I had to wait bringing my patience to its very limits… Numerous delays getting it over to me on the beach in the Maldives (just kidding…) meant that my screams of joy had to wait until this morning when my UPS guy FINALLY handed the precious box into my trembling hands…
I have barely had a few hours to play with my Treo 700p and I can tell you that my first impressions are VERY positive but I will have to wait a little while before diving into a full review. Also because I will be travelling for various meetings and conferences in London, Paris and Copenhagen I will unfortunately (aargh!) not be able to experience the full power of EvDO until I return to the US mid-June – clearly neither Sprint nor Verizon’s CDMA network is designed for people travelling to Europe for work or pleasure and like many I can’t wait for Cingular’s GSM release hopefully in a few months time...
In the meantime however I am already extremely encouraged to see so many past, present and future Treonauts raving about the Treo 700p. People such as my friend Om Malik (see his recent ‘Who’s Going to Kill Blackberry’ post) from Business 2.0 magazine for example did not previously think too highly of the Treo but now rates it as “pretty darn good”. Yet others tell me that after deserting the Treo 600 or 650 they are now very seriously considering a return to Planet Treonauts thanks to the new Treo 700p.
Overall though, as before most leading technology reviewers have continued to be extremely positive about the Treo in general and the Treo 700p in particular. Like some babies who are able to miraculously bring families closer together it looks like the Treo 700p will be the recipient of much love from all quarters in the months ahead.
While I have received numerous personal emails from the lucky Treonauts who already have their new Treo 700p telling me how absolutely delighted they are I am naturally equally curious to hear about what your experiences have been in the mini survey below.

Hello!
Can you tell me if the Treo 700p can download podcast recordings?
I listen to alot of podcast and would like to be able to download it direct from the treo.
Thanks
James Tom
How about an option for "The 700p is my first smartphone." Unless a normal cellphone counts as "Upgrading from another device."
By the way, do you still expect to be selling the Treo 700p from your online store soon? I'm about to give up and order direct from palm.
The 650 could download podcasts, you just have to get the software, but at EVDO speeds, now we can download them faster, I would have it set to download at night so I could get them while I slept.
Ciao
What type of software will I need to download podcast with?
I use bloglines and yahoo to receive my podcast rss feed and download from there.
Can I not just go to a site like TWITS and download from there?
Thank you
James
James,
I have been using QuickNews for about 2 years now, I think it was called easynews, but I use it to get podcasts. You can tell it to sync to rss feeds and podcasts at any time. So I have my podcasts set to sync at like 4 am so when I wake up there they are.
Goodluck.
Thanks,
I guess I will have to pay for the software.
Is there no free palm software for rss feeds?
Thanks again
James
Hello...I would like to tether a Treo 700p as an EVDO modem connected via USB with my Mac Powerbook. Has anyone tried this successfully? Thanks...Troy
you cannot tether to a powerbook, you can bluetooth dun, but it's slower than tethering. If you have a new macbook with intel chip you can run parallels in a window and tether, haven't tested speed beyond my house so not sure how much faster it is over bluetooth. otherwise you can boot up in bootcamp on the windoze side and rock it from there.
Can someone post an actual pic of the SPRINT Treo 700P? No stores around me have it yet, and I want to see the color. Thanks!
BenJoe - it is an actual picture of my hand and the new Treo 700p superimposed over the image of a nice tropical beach which I used to highlight how cheerful I was upon received it.
Blake - here is a pic of the Treo 700p. The Sprint version has exactly the same dark grey color. http://blog.treonauts.com/2006/05/treo_700p_palm_.html
Cheers, A.
Good Call, I love shots of your hand with your many treo's...I am surprised they didn't send you one sooner, Marc with Chatter I guess has been testing it for weeks.
Regarding upcoming GSM models, any idea if these will be available in both Windows and Palm OS versions? Also, any update on expected release dates?
The Treo 700p must be good. I had to listen to the passenger in front of me bragging about his on a flight two days ago. He was trying to convert a Blackberry user.
From cnn.com reviewing the Motorola Q
(a conversation between James Bond and Q)
Q: "So, Bond, how did the new cell phone work out?"
Bond: "Fine, Q. It has excellent aerodynamic properties."
Q: "I'm sorry?"
Bond: "I tossed it at a Russian agent, stunning her. Then I took her Treo."
I have had a Treo 700P for 6 days. PDA functions are great, but disappointing phone, particularly in voice dialing and BT capability. The voice dialing package recommended has little documentation, and from what I can tell thus far, does not work with KeySuite. Anyone found a good voice dialing solution?
Does anyone know how I can use the side keys to control the volume while the screen is off on the 700p.
Also I just baught a new card and would like to move music from my old card to the new is this possible.
Received my Verizon 700p yesterday. Retired my 650 and cruising on EVDO. Just one question - is there a way to manually disconnect the data connection on the Verizon 700p, like there was on the 650? Verizon says that you will still receive calls while the data connection is active, and I have an unlimited data plan, but I would still like to find a way to manually disconnect the data connection.
Got my first Treo on Friday, bought the 700P through Sprint. My main reason for buying was that I was carrying a phone, a pda and an iPod. I really like the phone so far. Web surfing and email are snappy. Count me in as a convert!!!
got my 700p a few days ago. evdo's great. however, one big disappointment: the camera!!
maybe it's a defect in my particular 700, but the 700 takes *significantly* darker/grainier pictures than my 650 in low light situations! did a whole series of comparisons and the results were consistently far and away better on my old 650! whereas the 650 bumps up exposure in a dimly lit room, the 700 makes no adjustments whatsoever...ditto in an overly bright situation.
there doesn't seem to be any exposure correction at all w/ the new 700p.
anyone else having similar problems??
(btw, the screen on the 700 is less vibrant than my 650 -- more yellow)
I have service with Cingular. Has any one thethered a Macbook Pro using Bluetooth? I have the unlimited data plan, but I can't find a GPRS script for the 650. Cingular, Palm, and Mac are all passing the book to each other.
Has anyone been able to get Opera running on the 700p yet?
Two questions:
Is there a way to add Voice dial to the Treo 700P? Does this phone support EMS messageing (Enhanced graphics)?
just an addendum to my other post re: the camera...
i am so disappointed in the 700's camera. really sucks....
did another comparison with a friend's 700p... got the same lackluster results.
not only is the low light performance much worse on the 700 vs. the 650, but overall picture quality in every aspect is also much, much worse...
vs. the 650, all pictures on the 700 are soft with visibly much less detail captured. this is clearly evident when looking at side by side comparisons on the treo screen tself of similar shots taken with the 650 and the 700. when the photos are actually downloaded onto a computer, the effects are even more drastic -- the 650 picture is much better in nearly every respect... specifically, in color and detail. obviously, the 700p now takes a higher resolution picture...but what good is it if it ends up looking so awful? (yes, the 700's pictures are now theoretically printable sizes, but if you plan on viewing your treo pictures the majority of the time on your computer or treo itself as i do, then 650 takes hands down better shots).
unfortunately, this is a deal breaker for me -- i'm returning my 700 immediately and sticking to the 650.
