Treo 700p FINALLY In My Hand!
You would imagine that I might have been one of the first Treonauts to get the new Treo 700p but as fate would have it I had to wait bringing my patience to its very limits… Numerous delays getting it over to me on the beach in the Maldives (just kidding…) meant that my screams of joy had to wait until this morning when my UPS guy FINALLY handed the precious box into my trembling hands…
I have barely had a few hours to play with my Treo 700p and I can tell you that my first impressions are VERY positive but I will have to wait a little while before diving into a full review. Also because I will be travelling for various meetings and conferences in London, Paris and Copenhagen I will unfortunately (aargh!) not be able to experience the full power of EvDO until I return to the US mid-June – clearly neither Sprint nor Verizon’s CDMA network is designed for people travelling to Europe for work or pleasure and like many I can’t wait for Cingular’s GSM release hopefully in a few months time...
In the meantime however I am already extremely encouraged to see so many past, present and future Treonauts raving about the Treo 700p. People such as my friend Om Malik (see his recent ‘Who’s Going to Kill Blackberry’ post) from Business 2.0 magazine for example did not previously think too highly of the Treo but now rates it as “pretty darn good”. Yet others tell me that after deserting the Treo 600 or 650 they are now very seriously considering a return to Planet Treonauts thanks to the new Treo 700p.
Overall though, as before most leading technology reviewers have continued to be extremely positive about the Treo in general and the Treo 700p in particular. Like some babies who are able to miraculously bring families closer together it looks like the Treo 700p will be the recipient of much love from all quarters in the months ahead.
While I have received numerous personal emails from the lucky Treonauts who already have their new Treo 700p telling me how absolutely delighted they are I am naturally equally curious to hear about what your experiences have been in the mini survey below.

I think Dr. Stirt sums it up nicely - if it ain't got WiFi it ain't got s***

I'm still stunned that Palm is so out of touch as to not include the most usable feature of any wireless/portable device. Here in Boulder, I can spend my entire day in free Wifi hotspots (literally - from campus to the radiology department at the hospital where I work).
Wake up Palm.
Does anyone know if all the third party software and hardware that I have for my 650 will work for the 700p? Most important of all is my Tom Tom Navigator 5. I am thinking of upgrading but dont want to unless I'm sure it will all work prefectly.
Thanks!
Andrew
I'm slowly coming out of my Samsung i500 Palm PDA phone shell and am learning to appreciate several of the Treo 700p features. A couple uglies are:
1) Can't figure out how to use the dial up #777 as a modem as I could with my old phone without opting for the rather pricey PAM plan. (beta PDANET utility isn't working with Sprint so far)
2) Haven't figured out how to kill the keyboard when slipping the phone into my pocket while on a bluetooth call.w(without hanging up) or even turning the back lighting off for battery savings - yes I know there is optionally available software 'to purchase.'
3) Can't figure out how to enter an appointment without having to go through the multiple steps to turn off the alarm every time. Why is that set everytime I enter an appointment now?
4) What no voice dials??? I must be missing something ... even the speeddialing is a several key process???
5) I can't get the 'Lock phone at a particular time' to work. My old phone could be set to lock each early morning and required a code to unlock after each 24 hours. Comforting if I were to lose the phone. I can't get the 700p to do that unless I completely turn it off, then it will lock.
Really these are minor complaints that 'must' have optional ways to adjust. I do like several of the features like bluetooth, SD memory card, excellent audio and a better than average cellphone camera. (see link: http://blog.myarchive.us/?p=323)
Keep up the great blog and comments ... I'm still waiting to become a bit more proficient before I wear a Treonaut T-shirt though!
:)
I'm out as far as Palm is considered, I've switched over to the Nokia e61. I forgot how great it was to actually be able to hear the people calling you!
For a GSM user like me - the treo 700p is just not worth the wait. Nothing significantly new about it and it appears that it might actually launch here without 3G! When you take into account it's not got Wi-fi....
Not a chance!
Charles - actually the new European GSM Treo will CATEGORICALLY have 3G and I believe that it will possibly be the best of all Treo models available.
We'll have to wait and see when it's released...
Cheers, A.
i wanted to know if anyone has info on the ebay member (sprintnetworks) who sells TREO 700p for $99.99 to new SPRINT customers or customers adding an additional line. i want to know if it's legit and for an existing customer adding an additional line how much will the second plan cost me or whether i can share my current plan with two phones. thank you
I got my treo 700 yesterday. It is an upgrade from the 650. I also had the 600 and the 300. So far I am very happy with the device. I would have expected the data services to be a little faster. The camera is much better than previous models. I love, that it can access streamin media such as sirius, podcasts, video, shoutcast it is a media powerhouse. I checked out the 6700 but decided on the treo because it has much better form factor and the screen on the treo is so much better. Another thing is I didnt want to change from standard sd to mini. Finally, the treo 700 came with a stereo headset which was a nice touch. The back light on the keyboard is also much better!
I can't believe the Treo 700. It now works with orb! THe treo 700 can stream data such as video, music, and tv from your pc! THis is the greatest thing ever! THe treo now is the most powerful handheld bar none! I ripped some dvds to my harddrive and tried to access them using my treo and orb and it worked!
I need major help downloading music to my treo 700p. please help!
