As Palm CEO Ed Colligan stated during Thursday’s quarterly conference call we are about to see another addition to the Treo family and this one will be called the Treo 680 and will (finally) run PalmOS [thank you for the image Jon].
Colligan mentioned that his company:
“will [release] additional significant news later this year. The fourth new Treo smartphone is coming soon for worldwide distribution and aimed at a broader demographic. We will target people who want to get more out of their business and personal time but who may be more price-sensitive than our original target market.
This customer may today own a feature phone with basic text-messaging capabilities or perhaps a phone whose email capabilities are limited or disappointing. We’re collaborating with a new China-based ODM, or outsourced design partner, that is helping us lower costs to end-user customers. You’ll hear more from us about this [fourth new Treo smartphone] in coming weeks.”
I have to admit that I am extremely excited about this forthcoming entry-level Treo and I’m very curious to see what type of specifications it will have – I imagine it to be a smartphone similar to the Treo 650 in capabilities but now with a fully redesigned exterior (the ODM partner is rumoured to be the same that manufactures Apple’s iPod) similar to the new antenna-less Vodafone Treo 750v.
At present there are all sorts of weird rumours floating around about what the Treo 680 will and won’t do – some quarters for example claiming that it will not have Bluetooth which I think is complete nonsense. We’ll have to wait a few more weeks to know for sure exactly what the Treo 680 has in store for us…
I guess that the question now begs to be asked: will Cingular have all three new Treo smartphones with the Treo 750p, Treo 750w and entry-level/low-cost Treo 680?

Does anyone know where I can see a comparison table of the specs of the 650 vs the 680? I'd like to know what we're missing for going to the entry-level Palm phone.
