Connecting People: Send Contacts, Calendar, Memo and Tasks Via SMS

I have stopped counting the number of occasions when people have called or sent me a text message asking me to forward someone’s contact details to them via SMS.

It sounds easy and should not take more than one click BUT for some bizarre reason known only to Palm and Access you cannot send a Contact (or Calendar, Memo, Task) via SMS when you select “Send Contact” in the options menu (below).

On the Treo 650 if you try to use the ‘Messaging’ option you get an error message saying “The Messaging application does not support this type of item’ while on the Treo 700 this option has been completely removed (presumably because it didn’t work in the first place…).

Because of all this in order to send someone’s contact details via email I’ve had to find the contact, go to ‘edit’ mode, copy the number that I want to forward, open the messaging application, paste the contact number and send it.  Not exactly the most streamlined option…

Now thanks to ShSh Software and its free send_with_sms utility (ZIP or PRC) all Treonauts can finally send individual Contacts, Calendar, Memo and Tasks via SMS (formatted as vCard, vCal and Text) by fully enabling this functionality so as to leave your copy/paste days behind.

While the send_with_sms utility works extremely well and simply the unfortunate thing is that the Treo does not recognize vCards or vCals sent via SMS (even though most other phones such as a Nokia or Samsung will…) so if you’re sending a contact via SMS from one Treo to another Treo the recipient will have to copy/paste…

Evidently I’d like Palm/Access to get their act together and 1) natively fully enable the SMS sending functionality and 2) fully support vCards and vCals but in the meantime the send_with_sms utility will at least provide you with a working solution.  My only suggestion to ShSh at this stage is to provide a secondary SMS option so that I could have SMS (vCard/vCal) and SMS (Text) to choose from.

Treonauts are always connecting

Agreed. It's one piece of functionality that I miss moving to the Treo.

I don't use it everyday but when I do it's really labourius. The 700p messaging app is very well - and uniquely - featured in other ways but this seemingly innocuous capability is missed. Worse so when companions and colleagues with lesser phones don't understand why I prefer to just look a number up and read it out to them.

้ำYou can download free send/receive vcard software for Treo at http://www.spug.net/forums/showthread.php?t=84536&highlight=vcard .

Does anyone know of a hack for the Treo's calendar so it works with iTIP/iMIP?

May C & Montai - thanks a lot for the tips. I had not found these before.

Cheers, A.

this looked pretty good, but it crashed my Sprint T650 as soon as I choose "SMS" from the send via window. Also, it was very hard to find after install - Uninstaller did not "see" it. I had to nuke it with Resco Explorer and then do a restore from bachup to make the 'Send Contact' functionality work again.

As usual, try it with caution.

You can remove it with fileprog (free), if doesn't appear in the normal list (under delete) because it's a patch and not a program in it's own right.

The other vcard software look great... just wish it was as seemlessly integrated as send_with_sms...

On my Treo 700p (Verizon) I am able to send vCard info from any of my contacts without this software. Above, it says that this option was removed in the 700, but that is not so with my 700p.

SOLUTION FOUND!!!

Like Andrew, I faced the same problem trying to forward a simple number, whether it be with my old Treo 600 or my current Treo 680.

When I went to Contacts and pressed the Center button on the number, it gave the options Dial, Message or Cancel. I found that with TreoSelecText I could highlight the number BUT I could not copy it!

I looked around for text copy/clipboard apps and FINALLY, I found FieldPlus !

It does the same as TreoSelecText and TreoNavi and is free. The key is that you can activate the good old system command bar by holding the Menu button.

So I went back to Contacts, selected a number and pressed Center button. As before, I could highlight the number. Then, I held the Menu button and the system command bar came out, and there were the Cut and Copy commands!! I tapped on the Copy command and went to Memo...it could paste!! Yeah!! Problem solved!!

Was very excited after that and quickly came here to post and let everyone know...and oh, Blessed Christmas to all!

Found that TreoSelecText can solve our problem as well...

Was fiddling around with FieldPlus when I found that highlighting line by line in Laridian MyBible didn't work so well as TreoSelecText's Shift-Up/Down line selecting, so I reinstalled the latter.

Then, I was looking at the Shift-Center options for TreoSelecText when I saw "system command bar"...I checked it and went to Contacts, pressed the Center button on a number to bring out the "Dial, Message, Cancel" dialog. I highlighted the number and pressed Shift-Center...it worked!

Same as FieldPlus, but TreoSelecText has the advantage of a better Shift-Up/Down feature...guessed I posted too fast the previous post, but then again, now everyone has 2 options to choose from, but as for me, I'm sticking with TreoSelecText :)
