Cingular Treo 680: Available In Black & Silver?
A couple of days ago Engadget posted confirmation that Cingular would indeed be the first carrier to release the forthcoming Treo 680. This by itself is not something that we didn’t already know but what struck me was the fact that the images of the Treo 680 that they found (inside an internal Cingular PowerPoint presentation) appear to show a black (above left) and silver version of our next smartphone.
At this stage there is no way for us to know for sure if Cingular will a) indeed have a black and silver version nor if b) this carrier has chosen not to release the Treo 680 with any other more ‘funky’ colour themes. In this last respect, what we do know is that Palm will sell the “Unlocked” version of the GSM-only (for now) Treo 680 in all four colours below directly via its online store and retail locations – simultaneously with Cingular’s launch or within days of it.
Evidently I am extremely glad to see that there may be a Treo 680 becoming available in black (my favourite) with Cingular but I would also have liked for this colour to have been made available for the unlocked model… Then again to be honest I also find both the white and orange to be extremely appealing so maybe I should get more than one and just decide which one will match my mood every morning
Joking aside, given that there is a choice of colours for the new Treo 680 I am curious to see how much this alone might influence your decision to purchase a subsidized Treo 680 from Cingular (estimated $299 with 1 year voice contract, $199 with 2 year voice contract or possibly FREE with 2 year voice and data contract) or an Unlocked Treo 680 from Palm (estimated $399)…
Additionally, I was told by Palm at DigitalLife in NYC that the three colours (plus silver) had been selected by gathering the votes of all Palm employees and choosing the most popular ones. Evidently there are a few other colours that I would personally have liked to see such as Gunmetal Blue, Lime Green, Gold, Yellow and Pink and again I’m curious to see what your choice might have been.

Judging from Palm's website, Europe will only get a boring grey version of the 680 :(
The black will really be sweet!!!
"the three colours (plus silver) had been selected by gathering the votes of all Palm employees and choosing the most popular ones. "
why would they do this. Shouldn' this have been done through precise market research?
Tunji - I am sure that Palm conducted a proper market research but simply used its employee and partner base (I believe that over 1,000 people participated) to make it statistically relevant...
Cheers, A.
Scott - I don't think that we'll be seeing a Windows Mobile Treo 750 before January and as for a PalmOS Treo 750 the jury is still out as to whether there will actually be one...
Cheers, A.
So what has happened to the 750? That's the one I really want.
$200 on a contract for voice only? That's a good deal. But for some reason, I don't see any carrier selling a Treo without a data plan...at least not here in Canada.
As cool as black is, the right image looks like a render. But here's to hoping! (Even though I don't have Cingular.)
Cingular reps in several cities say that the 680 will be available soon/early Novmember and the 750 (which is WM only) a couple of weeks later.
At the risk of repeating myself, I want the 680 now! I don't care about the funky colours... I plan to get a black or grey one and liven it up with skins if so desired.
Though I am sooooooo sad that they didn't put one out in gunmetl blue.
Is that a skin for the Palm OS shown on the black 680? if so, does anybody know what it is?
It's my guess that the black one is the new Treo 750 and not a color choice for the 680. Check out Vodafone's 750v at Palm's UK site....it's black.
It couldn't be, because the 750 has different buttons, and in inverted color keyboard. And it wouldn't run Palm OS.
Blake-Thanks for pointing that out...a little tilt of the laptop display and I now see the blue. Maybe if I tilt it a little more I will see the copper 680 released on Cingular...unfortunately we know that isn't going to happen.
I'm still trying to figure this one out...could the black be the 750p even though it's been very hush-hush? I will pass up the copper 680 for the 750p!
The "black" is pretty clearly a rendering, not a photo. I got so excited over the concept of there actually being a black model that I overlooked the "photoshopness" of the beloved black. I really hope the Nov 5th date is correct, and that they do come out with a BLACK model. Sometimes you wonder if they actually listen to customer feedback.... who cares if they just came out with their "black tie" 700.
Sry. Black Tie 650. (their reasoning for not having a black model 680).
