Google Maps On My Treo: Not Just Useful But A Ton Of Fun As Well
In a very short time Google Maps has become one of my favourite and most frequently used Treo applications. Until recently though I was using it primarily as a tool to find US street addresses as well as business locations and telephone numbers because I mistakenly thought that both the street maps and satellite views were limited to the US only (so far I have actually found that they extend to Canada, and pretty much all of Europe)…
I was in for quite a pleasant and amazing surprise when at a restaurant with friends last night I started zooming out of my Florida satellite view to suddenly see that I could actually get a full map of the globe above left. From there I started zooming back in and looking for other locations such as Hong Kong island above right.
Next, now realizing that I could actually zoom in and out anywhere on the planet I started hunting for monuments around the world such as the Statue of Liberty above left and the Eiffel Tower above right all the while my friends looked on in complete awe and amazement.
Next on my list were Buckingham Palace and the three Pyramids at Gyza which were rather hard to find but nonetheless equally impressive…
If you haven’t already done so I cannot more highly recommend that you install Google Maps on your Treo and start discovering for yourself just how incredibly useful and fun this free application is.
Treonauts always have the most fun…

Andrew - I've been doing the same party tricks for my friends. A god buddy recently returned from Greenland and was describing the volcanoes he visited so I zoomed out, then in and was able to follow his travels.
Just to let you know that GoogleMaps (version for Palm OS) now runs on Pocket PCs including Windows-based Treos using the StyleTap Platform for Windows Mobile. If you're interested please visit www.styletap.com.
I don't know about the treo version of google earth but on the PC version I can see very clearly the palace that I lived in, in Tikrit Iraq.
Just got back from my local Cingular store. The rep showed my the print-out showing that Cingular will begin taking orders for the Treo 680 and 750 on Dec. 10 for arrival Dec. 15.
I dont believe it one bit. The 750 will arrive before the 680 and it will not be that close to xmas....expect it sooner...NEVER EVER believe anything you see or hear at the Cingi store.
Tim 750 will arrive first? I hope it comes soon, I want it and I want to take it to Japan with me next month. I thought the 680 was coming first, I was considering getting one on the net from vodaphone.
i am a big fan of the blog.
i've been a reader since it started and i love it...
However you should have linked to googles' treo maps site like this:

Street maps are also available for locations in Australia. I am not sure of the extent of the coverage, but I did look up an address I was given on Google Maps on my Treo.
This isn't about the Google Maps on the Treo, but I couldn't find a place to send this...So I'm gonna post it here. Sorry for being off topic.
The official Palm site has the Treo 680 for sale. It's the Cingular version though.

What do you mean when gmail is available? I have been using it for about 2 years. Do you need an invitation?
Don't you guys find google maps too slow? I'm running it off the card on a 650
GoogleMaps on the Treo 700p works quite well, esp when the high-speed network is available. My main wishlist has more to do with the device.Future Treos MUST come with builtin GPS, this is a no-brainer!Also, they should enable output to a TV or monitor, without all that Hotsync hassle. If my digicam can do it then my Treo should be able to as well! Lastly, I should be able to save a screen capture!
Righ on Brent, I have a 700p, and it would be so much better If while looking at the map, it tells me exactly where I am. I'm with Sprint (sigh) and I know most cell phones have GPS (or something similar?) for helping them locate you incase of emergency. Combining the 2 services would be awesome.
Hey guys, yea I know i'm really late on this topic but was looking around and couldnt find a definite answer, but for Google Maps to work do you need to have internet on your phone?
