Spare Treo 680 and 750 Battery Now Available
During these past few days like me you may have spent many hours sending text messages and emails as well as making dozens of calls to express your best holiday wishes from your smartphone and naturally your Treo battery will have taken a bit of a beating in the process – particularly if you also have a Treo 680 since its battery is a third smaller (1200mAh) than the standard one found on the Treo 650 and 700 (1800mAh).
I have already covered this matter (see Treo 680 Battery Review) listing specifics of how you can manage certain settings on your Treo to optimize battery life but of course aside from regularly charging by far the next best thing is simply to own one or more spare batteries. In this respect I am glad to say that the original Palm 1200mAh battery for your Treo 680 is now finally available in the Treonauts Accessory Shop priced at $34.95 (a full $15.00 or 30% off MSRP).
Only 6mm thick and weighing a mere 27grams (0.95oz) the ultraslim Treo 680 battery easily fits in your trousers, jacket or bag while providing you with the benefit to quickly double your power while on the go.
Evidently once you have a spare battery you’ll also need a spare battery charger. For this you’ll want to get Palm’s Treo Cradle Kit (pictured above) which has the benefit of being both a charging and HotSync cradle for your Treo as well as a spare battery charger. Simply lift the front lid (image above right) to reveal the battery charger. [Note: the Treo Cradle Kit works with all Treo models from the 650 upwards. Also, the Seidio Portable Battery Charger unfortunately does not work witth the slim Treo 680 or 750 battery.]
Since I own about a dozen Treo smartphones and even more batteries I obviously need a couple of ‘charging stations’ to regularly recharge them and I personally keep one Treo Cradle Kit by my bedside and another at my desk (images above).
Another battery option for the Treo 680 that I’ll review separately and due to be released within the next 10 days in the Treonauts Accessory Shop is an Extended Battery Pack (pictured below) consisting of a large 2400mAh battery and new battery door which is a nearly identical pack to the Treo Ultra Extended 3200mAh battery for the Treo 700 which I recently reviewed.
I quite like the idea of the extended battery pack but it nonetheless does break the ‘design integrity’ of your Treo because of the bulging battery door that is required to accomodate the larger battery.
The good news is that if like me you already have a high capacity 2400mAh battery from your previous Treo 650 or 700 you will also soon be able to simply purchase the extended battery door separately.
By the time all the new Treo 680 power accessories arrive you should have four options to maximize battery life:
- Adjust the various available setting that influence battery life (see Treo 680 Battery Review)
- Get an original spare Palm 1200mAh battery or;
- An Extended 2400mAh Battery Pack (available within 10 days) or;
- A slim extended 1800hAh to fit the normal battery door (hopefully available within the next two months).
Finally, if like most Treonauts you own or plan to own more than one battery for your Treo I also highly recommend getting Palm’s Treo Cradle Kit (see my previous review) so as to easily keep two or more spare batteries constantly fully charged.
Treonauts always have the most power…

Andrew, good news for all Treo users on the battery front. Would you please investigate this story from Engadget about a driver hack to use the new 8 gb SDHC? I know how you carry 18 or 20 GB, how would you like that on 3 cards? Once you confirm they work, I am ordering....
http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/25/palm-treo-hack-enables-sdhc-support-on-the-700p/
Rob G - yes, I have seen this but not yet tested it myself. I want to enable 4 to 8GB SD cards on my Treo 650 and 700p as well as to ensure that the new SDHC 8GB will work with my Treo 680.
Cheers, A.
This is indeed great news. I desparately need a heftier battery. So with a 2400mAh battery, would that necessarily increase the talk time by 40% ? I am not too good with calculations.
Andrew...I have a sprint treo 700p and a topram 4gb sd card.
I've had it since april and it works grest. With the usb drive that came with the sd card from ebay, i use it as a flashdrive as well
Andrew, are your extended batteries made by Seidio? Over at Treocentral Seidio is saying that their extended batteries for the 650 is not fully compatible with the 680/750 therefore they will not be selling the extended battery doors to the current extended 650 batt owners.
If your extended batteries are not made by Seidio, who are they made by so I can buy a few? :D Thanks.
This begs the questions:
- Does the 2400mAh battery with door fit into the Palm cradle?
- Are there any rubber skins or cases available for this fatter Treo case?
thanks
-Doug
I Just Read This On The Seidio Site: Seidio claims a battery boasting HIGHER capacity than the stock 1200mAh but with "Identical Physical Dimensions" will be offered in the near future...Does Anyone Know About This...
I too just purchased the smartphone skin case. Does it allow a user to put the 680 on the cradle?
Where is the extended battery with cover for the Treo 680 that you promised us?
When will it come in a 3200mAh version?
Got a couple quick questions.
1- Can I use a Treo 650 Battery in my Treo 680?
2- Will it work properly?
3- Could it possibly damage my Treo 680?
1. Complained to Cingular about voice quality on Treo 650 during one year warranty period. They replaced with a new Treo 650. Complained again and asked for a Treo 680, which they sent gladly! Returned the 650 without the battery as Cingular asked me to.
2. Plan to use the Treo 650 battery as spare with the 680. Same 3.7 volt spec, so no problem using. Will carry it with a rubber band (battery cover will not work with this thicker battery in the 680) and use it without the cover on those rare occasions when primary battery runs out.
3. Using the "conditioning" for the battery meter (posted in detail elsewhere, where you fully charge and discharge the battery the first time) and the camera-battery drain patch from Palm, have been getting a full day's use from the 680 battery. Does not last two days, as my 650 did, but good enough.
