New iGrip Custom Fit Treo Car Mounts: Top Marks

Treonautseditorchoiceblog A few months ago I compared the various iGrip vehicle mount options to the Arkon Vehicle Mount Kit and found the Arkon to be my preferred solution.  However, following iGrip’s release last week of its new range of “Custom Fit” holders – specifically designed to fit all Treo models – my vehicle mount of choice is now an iGrip Custom Fit and I would definitely add it to my Top 10 Treo Accessories.

iGrip Treo Mount

There are four iGrip Custom Fit models as well as the option to purchase just the new Custom Fit Treo Holder if you already own a previous iGrip mount and wish to upgrade:

  1. iGrip Custom Fit Flexible Mount (pictured above)
  2. iGrip Custom Fit Cigarette Mount (below left)
  3. iGrip Custom Fit Sturdy Swivel Mount (below right)
  4. iGrip Custom Fit Vent Mount
  5. iGrip Custom Fit Treo Holder (further below)

My personal preference has always been the Flexible Mount because it lets me place my Treo at the most convenient location on the windshield.  Having said this, the currently most popular models appear to be the Cigarette Mount and Sturdy Swivel Mount.  [For California and Minnesota drivers please note that state law prohibits using suction mounts on their windshield but iGrip’s Flexible Mount also includes a Dashboard Mount which can be used instead.]

Those Treonauts who already own one of iGrip’s previous mounts will notice that only the Treo holder has been updated while the actual mounts (Flexible, Sturdy Swivel, Cigarette and Vent) have remained the same.

The new Custom Fit Treo Holder (above left and below) is _much_ smaller and lighter than its predecessor (above right) – 7.5cm instead of 10.5cm and 20gm instead of 83gm (less than a quarter the previous weight).  For example, the new iGrip holder + flexible mount weighs only a combined 86 grams compared to the 200 grams of Arkon’s CM910 – a huge benefit if like me you frequently travel with a mount to use with the TomTom GPS Navigator.  Furthermore, I found the new “easy slide” iGrip holder to be much easier and less cumbersome to use than the previous spring-loaded model which requires you to ‘grip’ your Treo into place.

IGripTreoMount02

As I mentioned earlier, thanks to a spring clip at the top center of the new Treo Holder (above) all iGrip Custom Fit mounts will fit all Treo smartphones from the thin Treo 680 and 750 (below left), the Treo 700p|w|wx (below center) or Treo 650.

Additionally, the new iGrip Treo Holder provides you with full access to the bottom connectors (below) to easily use a car charger while driving and also conveniently leaves both the camera and back speakerphone completely uncovered so that it won’t muffle your music or an incoming call.

Overall I am extremely happy with the new iGrip Custom Fit Car Mounts and particularly glad to see that a manufacturer has finally decided to make a holder specifically for our Treo.  Additionally, for me the significant weight savings and easy access to the connectors are also a big plus.

[Please note that due to heavy demand last week many of iGrip’s Custom Fit mounts are currently out of stock but a new shipment is due to arrive in the next couple of days.]

What about ProClip? They've been making custom-fit car mounts for the Treo for a while now. I haven't purchased one yet though, they are pretty expensive. I have a suction cup mount now, the kind that you have to squeeze onto the Treo. I'm getting really tired of the suction cup falling off of the windshield, and the actual phone holder has never really fit the Treo right. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with it. I like this new one you're showing here because the Treo will just slip right in, it reminds me more of ProClip's mounts.

Sad that the cigarette light mount doesn't include the ability to charge the Treo when in use. I'm blessed with two outlets in the front my truck, but not everything has this. So using the cigarette mount makes it impossible to also charge it at the same time.

Related... do you know of *any* vehicle mounts that offer charging, but don't also include GPS, etc? For some reason, the ones I find are either only mounts or include GPS and charging. I already have a GPS, so I'm only interested in a mount with charging...

A. Davis - great point. People who would like to use the Cigarette Mount + also charge their Treo should consider adding the Cellet Dual Vehicle Outlet Splitter http://shop.treonauts.com/content/accessories/5-47--602.htm which works great.

Cheers, A.

Why on earth doesn't the Cigarette Mount version include a built-in/integrated car charger? That's completely retarded!

Does anyone else make such an all-in-one, no-brainer solution? Because I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

If this mount is AMPS standard then I think you guys will like this combined with a bracketrons CBM Mounts. If you guys want to check it out go to www.bracketron.com. Just my 2 cents.

In response to Matt, I have a Proclip in my Jeep Grand Cherokee. True, they are expensive, but I'm very happy with it. They consist of a vehicle-speficic mount, molded to slip into gaps in the vehicle's dash, and a device-specific cradle that attached to the mount. In the case of my Treo, it slips in like the iGrip, and the bottom is open so that the ports are accessible. It's very well made, but of course it's not portable from vehicle to vehicle.

I have been using the older version of the igrip. I sure like that the new one gives you acces to the bottom of the phone if you want to use a wired headset. do you know if the new igrip is big enough if you have the 3200 extended battery in your treo?

Take a look at Gomadic.com. They have charging/holder solutions. I have used one for several years. Customer service is great.

Thanks Gerald... that's the kind of link I was looking for. For a window-mount solution, a powered option isn't really needed. But for the cigy lighter option, it just makes sense. And not bad for $40 right now...

Matt, Andrew refuses to review the ProClip because it can't be moved from car to car. Many of us have requested that he review it, but it seems we will never see it on Treonauts. :(

I was hoping to purchase an effective vehicle mount for my 700p and the custom fit iGrip seemed ideal...in theory. Upon receiving the product, I was surprised to find it in three pieces (the cradle, the piece to fit in the cigarette light and the gooseneck arm). There were no included directions (neither assembly nor installation). Despite several attempts, the piece that fit in the lighter was never snug, leading to turning of the gooseneck arm. The cradle never fit securely on the gooseneck either, running the risk of damage to the 700p. Lastly, the sleeve covering the gooseneck arm came loose within the first day. All in all, a truly dismal product. After quickly returning it (for a full refund from Treocentral within the first 30 days), I purchased a ProClip mount which has a custom fitted solution for just about any car. I am extremely pleased with it; it is a rock-solid mount with padding in the cradle.

A friend has an ipod mount that uses the cup holder as a base. Great idea (for those of us whose car has more than one in the console). I wish igrip made one of those.

I'm debating between this and the gomadic one...any pros and cons of one over the other...I looked at the Pro Clip, but too pricey for me...

Wonder if anyone's been able to find for sale just the hardware mount from Palm's GPS Navigator Smartphone Edition 3 bundle, separately from the rest of it. I like the edition 3 bundle's mount as it has two hinges in the middle, one more than all the other vehicle mounts that are out there.

But will it hold my Treo with its leather protector on it? Seems like there should be a version to fit it that way too.

Will this hold my 750 if I have the "Mobi Products 3300 mAh Extended Life Battery" on or is it not deep enough? If this won't hold it, what do you mount do you recommend if an extended life battery is used?

Drew - the iGrip Universal Mount

"should" fit your Treo with an extended battery but I have not fully tested this.

I hope this helps.

Cheers, A.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM IGRIP The company is a scam and doesn't stand behind its products

I ended up buying the iGrip Custom Fit Holder (Without Mount) for my Treo 755P and attaching it to a ProClip car mount for our Toyota Camry.

I liked the iGrip holder much more than the ProClip because it is far more streamlined and custom looking and it was fairly easy to adapt it to the ProClip mount, which was the best mounting system IMHO. Together they made an unbeatable unit.

It was easy to insert the ProClip mount into the car's center panel between the radio and the dash panel. The ProClip mount simply slides into the seam and is held in place without having to use the adhesive tape that ProClip provided.

Now I'm bummed out because I had to switch to a Centro and it doesn't fit in the Treo holder. Because the Centro is smaller it slips right through.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a custom iGrip holder for the Centro. :(

Anyone interested in my no longer needed iGrip/ProClip car mount or if you want to see pictures or get instructions on this adaptation, you can PM me in the Treo forum

In case I didn't make myself clear, I found both the iGrip holder and the ProClip mount to be well made and durable. I don't know what Patrick's problem was, but I experienced no problems with either product and only wish I could get a custom holder for my Centro.

HEAR THAT iGRIP! Please tell me there's a holder that will work.

Best wishes,

GeneL

You could find a lot of these everywhere. What more can make your car even more convenient than one these? So much more for your life's convenience.
