Palm Treo Software Updates
Last week Palm released a few important software updates and information for your Treo which is listed below.
1. Daylight Saving Time Updates
As you will undoubtedly already be aware, beginning this year, Daylight Saving Time starts on the second Sunday in March (March 11, 2007), and changes back to standard time on the first Sunday in November (November 4, 2007). This is a change from the current start/end date that is built into some Palm devices.
Palm devices, both smartphones and handhelds, need to be updated so that they reflect the correct time when the new DST changes take effect. Without the Daylight Saving Time Updates, calendar events and email messages will indicate an hour off the actual time in locations that observe DST.
DST changes affect _all_ PalmOS (Treo 600, 650, 680 and 700p) as well as Windows Mobile (Treo 700w, 700wx and 750) smartphones.
2. Outlook 2007 Update for Palm OS Treo Smartphones
If you use Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 on Windows XP or Windows Vista, you'll need this update to perform HotSync operations with Outlook's Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes, as well as optional non-wireless Email sync.
You will need to install this update if you:
- Sync with Outlook 2007 on Windows Vista or Windows XP
- Have a Treo 680 or Treo 700p
- Already installed Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager on your PC
- Use the Palm Outlook Conduits to sync with Outlook
You will not need to install this update if you:
- Sync with Palm Desktop instead of Outlook
- Have a Windows Mobile device (Treo 750, Treo 700wx)
- Use a third-party sync application like Chapura's PocketMirror
- Never installed Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager
- Sync wirelessly with Outlook using Exchange ActiveSync, and never sync through the USB cable or Bluetooth
- Have a Mac
3. Windows Vista Treo Support Updates
Palm Desktop and HotSync Manager compatibility with Windows Vista (Treo 700p, 680, 650)
Palm Desktop versions 4.1.4e and 4.2 will install on Windows Vista and will synchronize Personal Information Manager (PIM) items including Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Memos.
Older versions of Palm Desktop have not been tested with Windows Vista. You may be able to install and use other versions, but Palm cannot provide technical support for these installations.
Known incompatibilities:
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 users: install the Outlook 2007 Update to be able to sync your device with Outlook 2007.
- Palm Install Tool and Palm Quick Install ,the desktop applications that let you transfer applications and databases (.prc and .pdb) to your Palm device, are currently not compatible with Windows Vista.
- Chapura PocketMirror, the third-party software that lets some Palm devices sync with Outlook, may require an update from its developer.
- Third-party desktop applications, including those found on your Palm Software Installation CD (such as carrier-branded Dial-up Networking - DUN - desktop software and other applications), may not be compatible with Windows Vista. Please check back for updates, or visit the third-party application website for more information.
- Help files (.hlp files) found in some versions of Palm Desktop software may not be supported in Windows Vista. Instead, please reference your user guide or visit Palm Support and select your device for online help.
USB Dial Up Networking (DUN) with Palm OS Treo smartphones under Windows Vista
USB Dial Up Networking (DUN) software for Palm OS smartphones is not compatible with Windows Vista at this time. This includes carrier-branded DUN software for Sprint and Verizon, as well as the software for Bell, Telus and other carriers.
However, if you need to use Dial Up Networking with a Windows Vista laptop you will still be able to connect through Bluetooth wireless DUN. This method is compatible with Windows Vista.
4. Sprint & Verizon Treo 700p Maintenance Release Information
Separately, Palm has also confirmed to me that it is working on a maintenance release for the Treo 700p to address many of the issues raised by owners. It will become available as soon as it is completed and has been certified by Sprint and Verizon – most probably within the next two months. I’ll naturally keep you updated with news on this front.
Treonauts always get the first updates…

If you live in the US, most of you will have the fun of the new and improved Daylight Savings Time changeover. Oh the joy. Our Congress, who can't do anything constructive, has created a massive headache for the entire... [Read More]

Once again the Windows based people only get a blurb. Andrew if your going to talk about patching Treo's please include all the flavors see you initally state "DST changes affect _all_ PalmOS (Treo 600, 650, 680 and 700p) as well as Windows Mobile (Treo 700w, 700wx and 750) smartphones.".
For all the Winodws based Treo owners I offer up Microsoft's page on on "Updating Windows Mobile-powered devices for the new Daylight Saving Time" - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/daylightsaving/default.mspx
Just to be clear: the only country who is messing with daylight savings time is the US. Just getting even further out of step with Europe where the countries show an amazing level of cooperation in this utterly daft activity.
Question: should someone in Europe with a Treo 650 apply this update [if they are interested in the time in the US]?
When downloading over the air to my 700p (Sprint), it firsts asks if I want to save the download to built-in memory (Device) or to my memory card. After four tries and long waits, the DST Update would not download when "Device" was selected, but downloaded immediately (it's only 25K) when I selected "Card." Maybe it's just my location or phone or something.
Kudos to Palm for finally making a pain free (OTA!) update albeit relatively minor.
Hi Colin (post #2):
In addition to the US; Canada, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Brazil, and Western Australia have also made adjustments to their Daylight Saving Time (DST) dates in 2007. I assume Palm included these time zone changes too.
BTW, recent studies by the Dept. of Energy (US) have shown that DST can save almost 1% in energy usage because people take advantage of the increased summer daylight and use less energy for lighting. In the US, which spans 6 time zones, this 3 week date change seems worth doing.
But, if you're in Europe, it looks like you don't have to bother unless you need your World Time App to be technically accurate ;)
Regarding update #2, you state: ". . . as well as optional non-wireless Email sync." What program for Palm syncs e-mail from Outlook to the Palm device? I really need this feature and I can't find *any program* that does it. (Chapura doesn't, Agendus Mail has problems, and the Inbox-to-Go server has problems too). I could do this with my Treo 600, but not with the 680 (!!!).
After I executed this update and hotsynced, I had some really weird problems. Several of my appointments were shifted by one hour. It was not an across the board change - just the two week slot at the end of March between the new DST and the old DST. Very weird.
Anyone else have this problem?
Mark, same issue on our corporate Outlook servers when "fixing" the DST problem. That two week period is the time b/w the new DST kickoff and the reggularly scheduled one. Some fix - we had to move our appts back an hour manually so as not to miss our clients showing up in the office. GREAT!
I have a 700wx. Is there a update avalible to fix the text messeges to send pictures through?
Re: the above poster who was having calendar problems:
Palm Desktop users: You may experience shifting Calendar events during the periods of 3/11/07 to 4/1/07 and 10/28/07 to 11/4/07.

Cheers!
2 more months for a Treo 700P update? How ridiculous is that. If I could get my money back I would. I'm sitting here right now having to restore the phone from backup, again, after simply turning on the phone portion of the treo. It's really really getting old.
#11 Sounds like you may have a problem not related to the OS. I have never had the problems you mention with my 700P. I have the sprint 700P which I understand has the latest updates from Palm. You possibly have the verizon version.I suggest a backup of your phone. Then download a program called destaller (free) Delete any third party pgms, then make sure you have set up the relationship between your docs 2 go phonebook and the palm phonebook. Docs 2 go has a tutoral on this subject.
Finally, make sure you have enough memory available on your device. move all pics over to your SD card. Sometimes, a phone with several pics NOT on an SD card will cause resets. Do a hard reset, then load each 3rd party app one by one, just in case one of your apps is causing the problem. Hope this helps.
i recently got a new laptop that works on windows vista. i installed the treo CD and did a hotsync. my calendar (on the palm desktop) and tasks will not hotsync but my contacts and memos are still intact. all my media files are stored on my sd card, so not an issue there. is anyone else having this same problem?
Anybody else experiencing excess battery drain after installing the DST patch on their 650? My wife and I both note that our batteries are draining much faster than before after the update.
My xp computer crashed. I now have a treo 700wx that used to synch w/ active synch. My new computer is vista 2007 and I cannot download an upgrade, and the windows mobile site seems to say that my palm 700wx is not compatible with outlook 2007. I am missing something or is this for real?
Help!
I am also a HTC surround user. The updates that you have shared regarding it are helpful for me. I also want to use a HTC surround skin cover for my phone. Please do share some options for me.
