Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) Update + Unlocked WM6 Treo 750!!!

Treo 750 WM6 UpdateTreonauts who have been waiting patiently/anxiously for Windows Mobile 6 to run on their Treo 750 in the US since first hearing about it with Microsoft's original 3GSM announcement back in February will be delighted to hear that Palm and AT&T have finally now made this update officially available.

The AT&T Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 Update is available as a free download and as I posted previously when I updated my own Vodafone Treo 750v in Europe this Treo 750 Updater 2.25 provides the following enhancements:

  • Faster downloads with High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) – Get faster access to large attachments, streaming video, and more.
  • Update for Loss of System Sounds - Included in the update.
  • Improved Calendar functionality - See the big picture at a glance. New topline bar in the agenda view shows when you're free or busy, and when you have scheduling conflicts. Drill down to view meeting attendees, contact information, acceptance status, and reply-to or forward meeting requests.
  • Additional email support - Send and receive HTML emails with tables, bullets, and colored text intact. The "smart filter" for contact search has been updated so you can search for emails stored on your company's Exchange Server3. Even send an out-of-office message from your device.
  • Windows Vista compatibility - Easily sync your smartphone to your Windows Vista PC, via the Windows Mobile Device Centre (WMDC).
  • Better security and IT policies - Remotely wipe devices and SD cards clean in case of loss or theft. Plus, now IT can create and enforce tougher security policies, such as password protection to better manage the entire device fleet.
  • Run existing applications - Most Windows Mobile 5.0 applications will work after you update to Windows Mobile 6. The .NET Compact Framework will be installed in ROM to make it easier for developers to deploy custom apps.
  • Internet Connection Sharing - Utilize your smartphone capabilities by using your phone as a high-speed wireless modem for your laptop4. It's easy to set up and even easier to connect. Just click and go!
  • Email hot keys - Work in the fast lane with single-key access to your most frequently used email functions. Press "R" to reply, "A" to reply all, or "M" to move to one of your folders.
  • Email Inbox search - Find that important document or email. Automatically search for attachments, senders, or keywords by simply typing a few letters while you're in your email inbox.
  • Access Sharepoint - Get what you need then get going. Access documents stored on your company's SharePoint servers via links in HTML emails.

[Please note that Palm Windows Mobile 6 does NOT support the Blackberry Connect (BBC) service so do not install this update if you use or plan to use BBC on the Treo 750.]

Additional enhancements on this AT&T WM6 Update also include:

  • AT&T Cellular Video (CV) - Take a quick break with streaming video on your smartphone-like clips from American Idol and other TV programs, broadcasts from CNN and NBC, sports highlights, weather forecasts, and more.
  • AT&T Mall- Shop for MP3 ringtones and cool wallpaper graphics. Buy MMS postcards for birthdays and other events and pay as you go, with purchases showing up on your phone bill.
  • AT&T Music - Enjoy trial versions of XM Internet radio and Music ID, where you let your phone "listen" to the music and get a text message identifying it. Or download and watch your favorite artists in their latest videos. Link to popular fan sites. Buy tracks and manage your subscriptions from Yahoo! Music, Napster, or eMusic.
  • Voice Command via Bluetooth wireless technology - Get more done while you stay hands-free. Dial by voice, or hear your upcoming appointments with your Bluetooth headset. Voice Command available in English, French, and German only.
  • Active call access- Manage your calls more efficiently than ever. Mute calls or use the speakerphone with a single tap on your active-call screen.
  • USB cable charging- Travel tip: Now your smartphone will charge when it's connected to your laptop via the USB cable.

Based on my previous installation perfoming this update using an SPE Retractable Cable and Treo 750 connected to my laptop, I completed the WM6 update in just under the estimated time of 25 minutes without any problems.

Unlocked Treo 750 WM6

Additionally, the great thing for those people who were awaiting the arrival of the Unlocked Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 6 – which they can use on any GSM network worldwide (AT&T and T-Mobile in the US) with any SIM card – I’m glad to see that Palm have now also made this available on their website (image above) for only $549.

Can I install this update to unlocked Treo 750 running WM5? I bought it in HK a month ago.

Izlu, according to the release, this update is ONLY for ATT Treo 750s. Wont work with any other version.

Could this be too little too late for the Treo 750? There are slimmer smartphones running Windows Mobile 6 out now. Of course, many of those are running the standard edition since they don't have touch screens. And the Treo 750 does have the advantage of not being as wide as the Motorola Q9, for example, but its thickness is now an issue in the emerging day of the slim smartphone.

I still rather like the Treo 750. Palm's threaded SMS and photo dialer are great. As for the 240 x 240 screen - ah well, nothing can be done about that.

Does anyone know if installing WM6 will cause problems with Goodlink? I will have to reinstall Goodlink after the WM6 update and would hate to find out at that point that Goodlink does not work with WM6.

Does anyone know why I wouldn't be able to open the Updater file itself? I downloaded it ok, but it won't open...very fustrating. I can't even copy or cut/paste the file. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
Al

With WM5 I could use pocket msn to check my hotmail account automatically at set intervals. Does anyone have suggestions on to make this happen with WM6. Everytime I try to set the hotmail account it takes me to the web site to check mail. I much prefered the phone checking automatically and letting me know when a new message arrived.

Thanks

JCS, the WM6 upgrade, which I have installed on my Treo 750, includes GetGood, which I believe is the Goodlink application.

Shane, you can find a WindowsLive.cab file over at xda-developers, I think. This should give you the integration of the hotmail account with Pocket Outlook. I currently use this setup for checking my hotmail account.

I have an AT&T branded unlocked 750 that I bought on Ebay. Which upgrade version touse, the AT&T version or the unlocked version?

JCS,

Good Messaging ( lower than v5)does NOT work with WM6 - I just confirmed with my admin - and if you have any version less than v5 ( i have 4.x.x.x) - is NOT compatible with WM6.

You can check your Good version by going to About Good Messaging in the Good Menu.

I would highly recommend you reach out to your admin and confirm compatibility. If you upgrade, there is a chance you might need to be re-provisioned on the Good Server to generate a new pin for re-installation (assuming you have v5.0)

Hi, all. I've downloaded the ZIP file and when I extract it it creates a subfolder called "Results" which is empty. I've tried several times, extracting to different locations. I cannot download it again, as you know, due to MS restrictions. Has anybody else experienced this? Any ideas? Thanks!!

Hi Jill,

I had that problem with the empty "results" folder when trying to extract the installer. I chatted online with a Palm tech support person and his suggestion of copying the zipped file to another PC computer actually worked. Copy the current downloaded file to a jump drive or disk and then use that to copy the file to a different computer running XP or Vista. Then right click on that file and "extract all" -- it should then extract and you can double-click on the .exe file to continue the installation. Good luck.

Would I be able to use a storage card larger than 2GB now? It seems like other phones that have upgraded to WM6 are able to use ext. storage cards larger than 2GB.

When I tried to load WM6 from the SD card method I get a dcres.dll error. I've even hard reset the 750, still no luck! Any ideas?

Thanks

has anyone had this specific problem? this is AFTER i did a sprite backup upgrade too. everything else seems to be working fine, but without a contact book, i think the whole exercise is useless :(

I was told by ATT support that treo wm6 can only support 1 GB mem card. Has anyone tried 2 GB card?

Jeff, I've got the same problem too. Did the same thing you did. I've wasted a whole day trying to fix it and I haven't gotten anywhere.

MAC COMPATIBILITY WITH TREO 750/ WINDOWS MOBILE 6

All you folks are way more advanced on these issues than me, so pls excuse my lack of expertise.

I just bought a TREO 750 and I use Mac OS X 10.4.9. I own a TREO 650 and have had problems with sync. My question is; what system should I use on my 750 that works best with my mac. Thanks. If one of you good, smart people could e mail me, [email protected], that would be great.
