Sprint Treo 755p ROM Update Available

Sprint Treo 755p UpdateFollowing recent Palm updates for the Treo 680, 750 and Centro, owners of the Sprint Treo 755p will be glad to hear that a software update v1.07 is now available for them as well.

Details are extremely slim as to what exactly this update improves on the Treo 755p with Palm’s support website simply stating that:

“This software update is a tune-up that improves audio stability, software quality and device usability.”

As is often the case we have had to wait for the first users to install this update to find out a bit more.  So far at least most people report a very smooth update process and a noticeably “snappier” overall response using their smartphone.

It appears that Palm has now incorporated many of the changes first made on Sprint’s Palm Centro (see Palm Centro software enhancements list) including below:

Palm Centro SMS Palm Centro - SMS Short Code

[UPDATE: It appears that I was being a little bit too enthusiastic in my initial post for this update as neither the Power Saving Mode nor the Quick Launch Anywhere features are available in the Treo 755p after all…  These are still only available on the Palm Centro.  The most important improvement is nonetheless still a much speedier overall interface when using, launching and switching applications.]

Inbound/Outbound SMS Graphics (Image above left)
A minor enhancement here consists of the addition of small graphics indicating whether the last message in your SMS is Inbound (Green down arrow) or Outbound (Yellow up arrow) – it’s not much but it actually helps to better keep track of your messages thus making the Treo 755p SMS application even better (it’s arguably still very much the very best of any smartphone in the world today).

SMS Short Code Translation (Image above right)
Another new enhancement now allows you to simply enter the word ‘yahoo’ or any other 4, 5 or 6 digit alphanumeric into the SMS ‘To’ line (image above right) and your Treo 755p will automatically translate this to a 12-key numeric equivalent.

Please let me and your fellow Treonauts know how you get on with this update and if you find any new features not listed here via the comments below.

Gee..neither the new power feature of speed dial work on my 755p after the upgrade. I don't even see the new option under the Power options.

After the update, I also do not have the power option or the new speed dial feature. I have noticed that application switching is much quicker, there are now icons on the sms log and you can use short code. Only 2 updates I've seen.

Anyone found anything else?

My 755 waits almost 3 full seconds to 'come to life' after pushing the on button. Any idea if this will cure it? Anyone else experianced this behavior?

No power or speed dial for me either. It does seem to switch between apps much faster, especially from VersaMail which always used to be sloooow.

I am not sure what went on, but it did all this backing up and here I am hotsyncing it cuse it has just factory setting son it now..... I am wondering if there is a way to get that back up it did cuse I lost 5 messages (not a cluse from who) and a TON of stuff in my date book, should have hot sync'ed before hand, damn.....

Plus side, it is working faster.

No power stuff for me either. Makes me question the authority of Treonauts.

Thank you for the feedback - I have now updated the post to reflect the fact that neither the Power Saving Mode nor Quick Launch Anywhere are unfortunately part of this Treo 755p update...

Cheers, A.

Has anyone noticed the battery life draining faster. I fully charged my treo last night after the udate and was in the red by 2pm

Complete hell of an upgrade, spent 3 hours trying to get it to work, 40 for the upgrade, the rest troubleshooting why all my contacts were 'gone'. The fix was a complete hard reset and restore(plus reinstall of palm desktop 6.2 and an outlook 2k7 compatibility patch). Buyer beware, I can't get those 3 hours back.

Ok yeah, I am noticing a HUGE drain on my battery on this patch, I was at full this morning but 63% now and I havent talked or done the audio books all day. Might be a good marketing move now that the extended battery is now out :/

I haven't noticed the power drain, however I DID notice that the update DID fix the scheduling bug of Sprint's OnDemand bundled app(rebadged handmark express). My 1.04 treo would reboot at LEAST twice a day while trying to update ondemand. If I postponed it, it would just crash later, but it would happen VERY often. 3 hours of upgrade experience is NOTHING compared to the annoyance of that reboot EVERY day at random times. :D Yaay the update did fix something!

Great 40 minute upgrade. The Power Saving Mode and Quick Launch Anywhere are unfortunately not on my Treo 755p.

Easy upgrade. There were no problems at all. It does appear to be a bit speedier, but I don't notice anything else of significance that makes a big difference.

Is this upgrade worth the time? Thanks

I did the update at my cellphone store, I followed the instructions between helping customers. It took only about 35 min. The phone is swifter when switching applications, and the new graphics in messaging is nice, (as aforementioned... But, apart from that, no real changes. I've noticed no improvement in audio quality... but with a relitively painless update, I cannot complain to much.

I also notice that the blinking status light has stopped blinking. Has anyone else seen this?

I am no longer able to pair with the HandsFreeLink in my Acura TL after installing the update. Anyone else have similar problems?

Google maps reverted to version 1.1.2 in the upgrade, had to download current version from the web. Versamail now shows version 3.5.5 which was higher than my previous version, but I haven't noticed any new functionality. The blinking status light does not blink any longer.

I used to have to soft reset my phone frequently for the volume to work in the middle of a phone call, after the update I noticed that it's been working every time and actually sounds like the volume is a little louder than before. That's all I've really noticed so far...

Since I've done the upgrade I find that the people that at the other end of the phone have a hard time hearing me. Even my 4 year old daughter says that I need to make my phone louder when I call her. It's even worse using a Bluetooth head set.

Has anybody else seen this issue too?

With the new update, i can no longer take 'zoomed in' pictures. Wonderful, an update that takes AWAY features. SWEET!

by Jason | Feb 14, 2008 12:43:11 PM

Definitely faster, no question about that. Why did I have to search to find this update? It seems like Palm should have sent me an email or something. At least Palm is still taking notice of some 755p users. I thought they had written us off completely.

After applying the update which didn't exactly go smooth I can say stability seems to have improved however the battery life has decreased dramatically. There is no exaggeration to earlier post with similar remarks. With no usage at all (over night) my battery drained almost 50% in say 8 hours. I'm almost ready to consider removing the update and living with the restarts every so often for more battery life.

I received a new replacement 755p after my 700p died (the continuous reboot loop dilemma). I love the new 755p, but experienced a few of the same problems as with the 700 - so I decided to install the ROM update. Everything seems to be working perfectly, but I am noticing a SEVERE BATTERY DRAIN.

Anyone know of a solution?

Just performed the upgrade to 1.07 on my 755p today and can confirm the quick launch and the power saving now shows up. The only difference I've noticed is the label for the power save. Instead of "Backlight during calls:"
on the Centro, the 755p shows "On a call, dim backlight after:". Plus, the shortest time for the on-call backlight seems to be 30 seconds for the 755p and 15 seconds for the Centro.
