Unlocked Treo 680 Update + New Palm Desktop for Vista
Unlocked Treo 680 Update 1.12
Following the recent Treo 680 Update 2.11 for AT&T/Cingular, I’m glad to see that the Software Update for your Unlocked GSM Palm Treo 680 is finally here. This Treo 680 Update 1.12 offers the following enhancements to your device:
- Corporate email as it arrives – Have your corporate email delivered to you with Microsoft Direct Push Technology. Accept or decline meeting invites and access your company directory on the go.
- Power saving enhancements – Helps conserve battery life with improved power management and updated default system power preferences.
- Supports larger expansion cards – Supports up to 4GB SD expansion cards (including the SDHC format), sold separately.
- Enhanced ringtone support – MP3 and other sound files purchased from the web or sent from friends can now be set as ringtones and alerts (formats: MP3, AAC, AAC+, MIDI, WAV, and AMR).
- Three updates in one – This update incorporates three previously released software updates: Treo 680 Camera Update (January 2007), Treo 680 Security Patch (May 2007), and Treo 680 Unlocked GSM smartphone SMS Update (July 2007).
As Palm claims, it took me about 30 minutes to complete the installation of this update.
Palm Desktop for Windows VistaIt’s been over eight months in the making but Palm has now released its final version of Palm Desktop for Windows Vista which is compatible with the following smartphones:
- Palm Centro (with Windows Vista or Windows XP)
- Treo 755p , 700p, 680 (with Windows Vista only)
New features in this Palm Desktop include:
- Integrated Desktop: Provides a single desktop and conduit compatibility across all Palm OS 3.5.x through 5.4.x devices.
- Enterprise Friendly HotSync Enhancements: HotSync Manager 7.0 is a standalone application, and no longer requires Palm Desktop to be installed on the computer. All user management functionality has been moved into HotSync Manager 7.0 Migration Tools: the installer checks for the latest settings and reports any known incompatibilities with third-party software.
- Multilingual Support: Localized in Brazilian Portuguese, English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
- Install Tool: The Install Tool, which replaces the "Palm Quick Install" tool, allows you to sync .prc and .pdb files (Palm OS applications and databases) to your device.
- Outlook 2007 synchronization: Allows you to use your USB sync cable to synchronize with Outlook 2007's Calendar, Contacts, Tasks and Notes. This version includes all previously released patches such as the Outlook 2007 Update.
Treonauts always want to be updated…

Since third-party Palm software is so buggy, and because the limited Treo memory gets easily thrashed, a hard reset will generally provide better performance, even without installing any Palm update.
Too much work, I am buying an iPhone instead
like 10 million other happy Apple iPhone users!
So WHERE is the Mac OS X version of the re-vamped Palm Desktop?! Many years late, non-existent, and because of that -- most Mac users have moved on to iPhone!
To 27 Palm
Lets see when iPhone gest third party applications. iPhone is a gadget, not a tool. Should you be willing to move to Windows Mobile, this would make sense.
Hard reset provides better performance on any platform.
I have a treo unlocked (unbranded) and a ATT branded(brand new). Using them on Tmobile in Atlanta. I experiencing dead air when making calls with VPN TMobile. Ie I make calls and please answer I can't hear them and same on my end. Then after 10 - 15 seconds we can hear each other.
Just downloaded the update for the unlocked treo 680 - what a difference!!! I must say before this update the battery life, how could I say...? SUCKED!! Even after replacing the battery a couple of times. Now it seemed that I will be able to go for a few days between charges.
Overall, I am underwhelmed by the 680, I upgraded from the 600. The 680 is nice but somewhat slow between applications, menu scrolling etc...
Until now I was wondering if I would stay with Palm. I have had palms for the last 10 years but lately have been disappointed - especially with palm support. I had to call headquarter to get anywhere. Even then it was difficult. Lucky that there is nothing out there that really catches my eye. I like the functionality of palm/smartphone and I don't want windows on my PDA.
I am a contractor and I wish they would come out with a nice flip so I could keep it in my pocket. Cases kind a get in the way - for me.
Cheers

Although I was able to install the upgrade successfully with no problems, am I the only one that has had an obvious and significant DECREASE in battery life?
It's Saturday - VERY light use day... a couple of short phone calls and a few text messages but NO data activity at all. I am already getting the "your battery is low" indicator. HELP!
Since I updated my 680, the Blue&Me connection to my Fiat stops working without reason.
I haven't done the upgrade yet. Luckily, I've been too busy. :) But my girlfriend has, and unfortunately, she is experiencing bluetooth issues. Seems, since the upgrade she is unable to pair her HP700 unit to her phone (unlocked Treo 680). She has noticed an increase in battery life, which is what she wanted, but it is an ironic satisfaction seeing how her bluetooth is a business/personal necessity.
From reading the comments here, treonauts, mytreo, and other treo specific sites, it seems the first step is to backup and perform a hard reset (cleaning the treo) prior to doing the upgrade.
We will attempt a full hard reset and see if that fixes the situation.
Thanks to all who post comments, they have been so much more helpful than Palm "Support". :(
Hey all,
i have updated my treo 680 and haven't had any problems so far. I didn't do any hard reset when i updated my phone. Bluetooth is working fine. The phone has become considerably more responsive and there has been some improvement in battery life.
i have only one complaint. My 680 hangs once in every 2 weeks and needs a soft reset. This problem has been there before the update and is still there after the update. I still can't figure out what is the problem.. probably memory drain due to OS bugs. I hope Palm can figure out the bugs and figure out this problem.
otherwise, there is no reason for me not to love this phone.
I have updated my treo680 but the language is set to English while I have an AZERTY device from France, my question is if I do a hard reset and choose French language again does the update 1.12 still working fine?? any hint please? thanks
