Sprint Treo 800w ETA July 13
Thanks to a leaked inventory sheet (below) it appears that the Sprint Treo 800w will indeed become available to the general public on Sunday, July 13 instead of the previously rumoured later date of July 22 and Sprint enterprise customers can expect to get their hands on one as early as Wednesday, July 9.
The sheet also confirms most of the high-end Treo 800w specifications that we had previously reported including:
- Runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (Touchscreen)
- Delivers high-speed wireless broadband data speeds on EvDO Rev. A
- Offers 802.11g WiFi with a dedicated one-touch shortcut button
- Provides GPS Navigation with built-in GPS functionality that allows points of interest search and mapping
- Includes Live Search for Windows Mobile
- Benefits from 128MB user-available memory (Free RAM)
as well as:
- 2.1 Megapixel Camera
- A2DP support for Stereo Bluetooth Headphones
- Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR
- USB Sync & Charge Connector (will require a new set of accessories)
Additionally, the Sprint Treo 800w is expected to become available at a price of $249.99 after rebates and a two year contract or $599.99 for the smartphone alone without a contract – pricing this latest enterprise-class Palm device at the same level as the BlackBerry Curve and the forthcoming 3G iPhone.
There’s no doubt that quite a bit of excitement is building up around the Treo 800w – the first Palm smartphone to offer built-in WiFi + GPS + Bluetooth 2.0. Having said this, for many Treonauts the biggest downside is that the device runs Windows Mobile 6.1 instead of the existing Palm OS or new Palm Linux OS (expected to be unveiled at the end of this year).
In this respect, I can’t deny that although I have myself always had a strong preference for the user-friendly Palm OS there have nonetheless been a number of consumer-friendly enhancements made in the latest version 6.1 of Windows Mobile that are helping me and others reconsider this operating system.
We’ll have to wait until I actually get the Treo 800w in my hands to determine if the combination of high-end hardware specifications, slimmer and smaller form-factor as well as the Windows Mobile 6.1 enhancements deiver a winning formula but for now at least I’m glad to see that Palm is making greater strides in the right direction.

Verizon is getting better - it's only going to be two months behind anyone else in releasing this phone. That must mean they are getting more efficient at crippling their phones before releasing them to the public.
I'm not a big WinMo fan, having used the Mogul for a couple of months, but with the specs this Treo is offering, with what sounds like a sufficient amount of memory, I'd certainly be interested in giving this device a test run. Hopefull it will come to market as bug free as the Centro has been. This would help Palm recover from previous blackeyes (i.e. 700p).
Any thoughts on availability in store considering that July 13 is actually a Sunday, not a Saturday as mentioned above? July 14 in-store perhaps?
You're absolutely right Sam about Verizon's release of this phone. Guess they like being last and can't HEAR their customers....
I've been a big fan of my Sprint Treo 700p since Christmas 2006, largely because I'm also a MAC fan and found the sync handshake best for PALM than Windows. Unless I'm jumping to conclusions about how a move to the new 800W will keep me happy, I'll probably make my next move to the iPhone. Bill
I would still miss Palm OS. There is no other system that can match Palms convenience, clarity and speed. I only wish that Palm brings one more version 800P that too with GSM radio.
Is WinMo hopeless? Any word on the improvements to 6.1.
i'm real proud of treo for the improvements on the upcoming model, but here's the thing... is this going to be mac compatible? that would be real nice.
