Sprint Treo Pro Release Date
Release Date & New Specs For Sprint Treo Pro Revealed
While most of the world appears to have gone completely gaga over the upcoming Palm Pre the fact is nonetheless that some excitement is also justified for the terrific Windows Mobile Treo Pro that I have been using for the last few months but which has (rather frustratingly) yet to be released by a US carrier.
The good news is that following its recent FCC approval and according to multiple rumours we only have a few more days to wait before Sprint finally releases its CDMA Treo Pro this coming Sunday, January 25.
The other good news is that thanks to a leaked Sprint sales presentation we also learn that the Sprint Treo Pro will apparently have some even higher specifications than the existing Unlocked GSM Treo Pro with among others:
- Much Faster CPU at 528 MHz (up from 400 MHz)
- More Memory: 128MB program memory (DDR) and 256MB non-volatile memory (175MB user available up from 105MB)
- Better GPS: a full aGPS chipset is now “Assisted & Autonomous” which means that your smartphone does NOT need to be within Sprint coverage to provide you with GPS navigation support.
- More Java: instead of just the standard Windows Mobile JVM it is rumoured that the device will also have Sprint’s own Java solution called Titan.
- More Apps: the recently released Kinoma Play will apparently come bundled with your smartphone + also expect more Sprint apps including Software Store, Sprint Music and SprintTV.
- Mobile Internet Explorer 6: this is not yet confirmed but given the much higher specs the Sprint Treo Pro may have the new IE 6 in ROM.
The same leaked Sprint presentation (slide above) provides this short introduction:
The Treo™ Pro by Palm® is a feature rich Windows Mobile 6.1 OS PDA which is a perfect balance of robust productivity and simplicity. Features include embedded WiFi with a dedicated short-cut key, A-GPS, EV-DO REV.A and a 2.0 mega pixel camera. This device has an updated stylish and slim form factor design. Data services run on Sprint’s Nationwide Mobile Broadband Network.
Overall, Palm and Sprint have clearly been working hard to ensure the delivery of a truly stunning Treo Pro experience. I am personally extremely excited with all the enhanced CPU, memory and GPS specifications which will make this smartphone fly even faster than my current GSM version and undoubtedly place it as the undisputed best Windows Mobile smartphone on the market today.

I have used Palm OS since 2000. If I were to move to Pro/Windows, would 8 years of calendar and contacts and applications be transferred easily?
I'm a Sprint customer running with an old school 700p. Been dying to upgrade but going to have to wait for the Pre. Sorry, but Windows Mobile is LAME!
@Mike - the Treo Pro and Palm Pre have a somewhat different target audience. While the Pro is clearly for the corporate/business mobile professional the Pre on the other hand is much more of a consumer/prosumer device not unlike the iPhone.
Although the Pre will clearly deliver some rather cool innovations there is no doubt that I have been _extremely_ pleased with my Treo Pro experience.
@cook - no problem at all moving all your data to the Treo Pro (particularly if like me you're using Outlook).
@neo - before using the Treo Pro, like you, I also felt that Windows Mobile was (to put it mildly) no quite friendly. However, my experience with the Treo Pro over the last couple of months has clearly demonstrated that the combination of superb hardware along with a couple of essential third-party applications delivers a rather stunning experience.
Cheers, A.
I have been waiting on the Pro to get to AT&T. Now it goes to Sprint and the Pre too. What gives? I guess I am going to have to switch to another divice damn it. Still stuck on a Treo 650. That sucks.
I got the Treo Pro last year after using other Palm devices for years. I like the Pro, but I found Windows Mobile to be rather dissapointing. It is very *capable* but windows makes everything more difficult and confusing. This means users are less likely to use it to its potential, simply because it is hard to do so.
@ cook - Yes, you can migrate your data to Win Mo. If you already have your data in Outlook it's easy. If you have it in the PDA and Palm Desktop (like me), then it's a little tricky. And if you have extensive "Notes" on your Palm; they will become less usable.
@ Mike & Neo - I'm with you. As soon as an unlocked GSM Pre is availble, I am moving back to a Palm OS.
I've had a Treo 600, 650 and now a 680. I love my 680 and want to upgrade. But the best price i've seen for a Pro is $495 compared to $199 for a Bold. Is a Pro really worth $300 than a Bold? Or, is one Pro worth more than TWO Bolds?
Ringer silence switch is critical! So is keyguard unlock through center button. Will this come on the Palm Pro? These are two of the most annoying things that I have found when I briefly moved to a Windows Mobile device. You actually had to maneuver through the start menu to get at these two critical functions.
@Dr Dan - when released the Sprint Treo Pro with a two year contract will likely become available for $199 or $249.
@nmt - Both ringer silence switch and keyguard unlock through center button are available on the Treo Pro.
Cheers, A.
I switched to a Pro from my 680 and am ok with the device, but seriously miss my 680 as I only switched to have 3g and built-in GPS. As soon as the unlocked GSM Pre comes out, I'm swtiching as well.
@Andrew - you mention "essential third-party applications" and perhaps that's what's preventing me from really liking my Treo Pro. What apps are you referring to?
@Doug - I covered many of these essential WM applications in this post:

I hope it helps.
Cheers, A.
Jerry--AT&T may or may not pick up the Treo Pro (the way they were the last GSM carrier to get the Treo 600, out of 3 at the time). Whether or not they get the Pre after Sprint's exclusive, there is bound to be an unlocked GSM version. That's the one I'm going to get, whether AT&T carries it or not.
Per reports around the Net today, looks like the Sprint Treo Pro has been delayed again -- new release date is simply "TBD".
I wonder what is causing the delay? Anyone hear anymore than this post?
The latest I heard from Sprint is the new release date for the Pro is March 15.
per Palm rep. Alex H. Edelman, the release date is March 15th
