Plantronics Discovery 925 Review

The new high-end Plantronics Discovery 925 Bluetooth Headset has been released to try to compete against the likes of the Jawbone – our Editor’s Choice and the bestselling wireless headset for both the Treo and Centro (see my review).

Plantronics 925

The Plantronics 925 offers an elegant, ultralight (only 8 grams / 0.3 ounces) and very slim headset with silver and black accents around a small rounded square main body and rounded triangle boom microphone which extends some 2 inches.  “Stabilizing” ear gels (three sizes included) provide a comfortable fit and do away with the need for an ear hook – thus saving space.

One large front button controls Power On/Off and Call Answer/End while a smaller side button provides volume control (there are 3 levels).  I particularly like the fact that Plantronics have decided to give the Discovery 925 a micro USB connector which makes it easy and convenient to charge via your PC while on the go with the included USB charging cable.

Discovery 925 Charging Case

The Plantronics Discovery 925 offers up to 5 hours of Talk Time and 7 days Standby but a small included convenient leather Charging Case (pictured above and below) can double this – you simply insert the headset and connect it to the micro USB plug in the charging case for additional power.  You can also charge the headset in the case with either the included wall charger or USB charging cable as the case has a micro USB connector at the bottom.

In terms of call quality the Discovery 925 is good but still not as good as the Editor’s Choice Jawbone (comparison images below).  While the Discovery 925 is able to deliver a fair level of background noise cancellation it is nonetheless no match for the far superior technology provided by the Jawbone which almost completely eliminates external noise.

As I mentioned earlier, the Discovery 925 kit is nonetheless very complete with an included Wall Charger, USB Charging Cable, the leather Charging Case as well as a full set of three ear gels.

Discovery 925 Kit

Overall the Plantronics Discovery 925 is an attracitvely designed, ultralight headset with good voice quality and a terrific accessory kit but for an expensive ($129.95) headset trying to compete at the very top end of the market I feel that it does not offer very good value nor any really unique features beyond the convenient charging case.

Plantronics Discovery 925

If you’re willing to spend the money for the very best Bluetooth headset available on the market today then my top recommendation remains the Aliph Jawbone – it may not be the prettiest nor the smallest but it’s superior voice quality and unbeatable noise cancellation technology are worth every penny.

Newest jawbone is now available smaller in size, same ability you really need to check it out. I plan to order soon.

Felix - I wrote about the New Jawbone a little while ago http://blog.treonauts.com/2008/05/new-jawbone-rel.html

Aside from a slightly smaller size the New Jawbone unfortunately offers no really new and unique benefit above the original Jawbone. Additionally, considering that the original Jawbone is only $89.95 compared to $129.99 for the new there's a significant value gap.

Cheers, A.

Yes, Andrew, but for those of us who can't wear the original Jawbone, it's nice to have the option of the smaller version - or this new Plantronics......

Meanwhile, another one I'd like to see you review (at least I'm pretty sure you haven't yet) is the Callpod Dragon. It's similar in size to the BlueTrek UFO and priced in the same range as this new Plantronics and the new Jawbone, but has some rather unique features.

I loved star trek & all but for the price & ability to work two phones I prefer the Plantronics 520 & as a backup I use the 665 when I only need one so I don't understand what all the fuss is about?

I tried the Jawbone latest version and could not get it to stay on properly. I tried all the earbuds and earclips combanations and still could not get it to stay the way I wanted. There is this little sensor that has to touch your face for the device to work properly, Good luck. I do service work and I'm in and out of my truck and the Jawbone just wasn't staying put unless I was sitting still. I have the Palm Centro and got complaints about the sound quality on the other end as being not to good. So I brought it back and got the Plantronic 925 which also has great reviews. I love it! It stays on, it's very light and the sound quality on both ends is subperb

I had the same issue with the Jawbone. My first one, I could barely hear, and my second, I kept cutting out because of that little white nub not staying in touch with my face.

The 925 arrives tomorrow.

I can't quite figure out the best way to position the gel ear bud for the optimal fit. It fits just fine the way I have it and stays in place, but I feel like it's not as far in my ear as my Plantronics Voyager was - but those suction into your ear so that may be the difference. I really like the headset and have two phones - one for business use and one for personal use so the dual pairing is awesome!!! The carrying/charging case is also great! I really like this headset the more I use it - not quite at loving it yet, but we'll see. You can get these very reasonable on Amazon.com.

I am interested in it for a long time! I had the same issue with the Jawbone. My first one, I could barely hear, and my second, I kept cutting out because of that little white nub not staying in touch with my face.
